The best thing about bed rest, Alanna quickly decides, is that the bedroom has become her own personal domain ( Read more... )

It's something of a lucky stroke that Gibbs wandered inside today. And that he saw the note. And that he could read it. And that he was able to find his way here. But one of his skills is that he can be where he needs to be when he needs to.

"Alanna?" He peeks his head around the door, not entirely sure he should be entering even Alanna's bedroom without an invitation.

The doors are mostly open during the day, but Puff had shoved this one partially closed in an effort to get at an article of clothing. Alanna looks up from her book in surprise, spares a glance for the dragon and smiles. The book is unceremoniously dumped on the floor.

"Hullo, Gibbs. Come in! I promise I won't bite."

Gibbs is sure of that. But then he sees a very strange beast. "Aye, but what about him? Or is that her?" He moves closer to the bad, carefully.

"It's a her," Alanna answers with a grin. "Her name is Puff. She's a dragon."

Puff trills suspiciously at the stranger and alights on Alanna's shoulder.

"Not from my world, however. Dragons haven't been seen in Tortall for hundreds of years."

When she reads Alanna's plea for company, Goldy is quick to respond—and not just for the sake of the knight's sanity.

Though her emotions may still be walled off for the most part, she has been doing a little better since her chat with James Bond. Thanks to his casino idea, she has a new project to occupy her and distract her, thus keeping all potential meltdowns at bay. However, she could still use some genuine non-sexual companionship. And who better to provide it than her oldest bar friend?

When she arrives at Alanna's room, her hands are well and truly tied up in the carrying of several large gift-wrapped parcels, so she kicks at the door a few times instead of knocking.

"Hello? Alanna?"

"It's open," comes a loud cry. Alanna sounds distracted, but it is also fairly evident that she has gotten very good at raising her voice.

It's possible she ascertains the identity of her visitor. There's no recognition of it, and she says nothing else. Just inside the front door, sounds of fighting can be heard from the bedroom.

Alanna is watching a kung fu movie.

Intently.

Goldy wasn't expecting Alanna to get up and let her in—she's not that selfish. Reacting to the invitation, she manages to juggle the boxes around and get the door open, then hip bumps it wide enough so she can sidestep through.

Once inside, she tracks the combat sounds into the bedroom.

"Okay, lady. You can quit moping now. I'm here!"

Her eyes fall to the television as she dumps the packages onto the foot of the bed.

"Ohhh... Sonny Chiba! Sister Streetfighter!"

"Sssssssh!"

Brow furrowed, Alanna waves a hand at Goldy and leans around to watch the end of a fight segment. Her breath hisses out at a well-delivered high kick, then she turns to her visitor with a smile.

"It's rubbish. Goddess, what's all this?"

"I have no weapons that need cleaning, but I did manage to rustle up a Buick - upside down and everything."

Or - I just talked to the Bar and she gave me this little cake shaped like an upside-down car that could be a Buick.

Each time someone comes to her door, Alanna gives a thought to personal safety, reminding herself she's not exactly in fighting condition. But then she smirks and laughs it off, feeling unused reserves of her Gift and the dagger hilt under her pillow.

Puff is also quite useful in a pinch.

This is why, when Harry pokes his head in, she simply quirks an eyebrow and grins. She's glad of the distraction.

"I've never heard of a Buick, but it looks delicious."

I feign a look of being affronted - really.

Then I shrug. "Yeah, you didn't know what it was when I mentioned it in my nothing short of hilarious job interview. The real ones are much bigger than this and harder to flip over. Best I could get in a portable format was a cake."

"Aaah, yes. I remember now," she drawls. "An automobile. You know, that is still one of my favorite interviews. I think you should be proud, Harry."

Eyeing the cake, Alanna licks her lower lip and rearranges her bulk in an upright position.

"Thank you for this. Have a seat."

Elaine peers around the door frame, smiling tentatively. "Alanna?"

"Elaine!"

Smiling, Alanna struggles to sit up.

"I take it you saw my note," she says, blushing faintly.

"I did," she says, coming in to the room and sitting on a chair beside the bed.

"I brought you some things," she says. She brings out a copy of The Art of War. "I don't know if you've read this yet..."

Alanna's eyes light with delight. Reaching for the book, she runs a reverent hand over it and smiles.

"I haven't yet, no. It's wonderful. Thank you, Elaine. I will likely devour it."

Domino, just a little older, and far wiser than the last time she'd been in the bar, happened to see the plea for company note about weapons and the cleaning of them.

She wasnt the sort, usually, to let other people near her weapons, but she also wasn't going to get down on someone for doing the natural thing and getting pregnant, wasn't her idea of a good time.

So, that said, there was a bottle-blonde bounty hunter in an oversized sweater and a pair of battered jeans peeking around the doorway, "Hullo?" A pause and then: "I brought pizza and ice cream." Because that was what Bar had given her when she'd asked for something that would be good for a pregnant woman.

Alanna blinks.

Her face is carefully expressionless; she hasn't survived this long by betraying her emotions when it really matters. Something in the back of her mind tells her this isn't Elizabeth, but she's wary all the same.

All right, perhaps a little something slips. She eyes the pizza hungrily.

"Hullo," she responds cautiously. "I've become greatly enamored of pizza and ice cream. Thank you."

She laughed then, stepping into the room, "Well then, I'll be happy to share. S'what Bar gave me when I asked for something that'd be good for a pregnant woman." She shifted the dishes to one arm, extending a hand, "Domino Harvey."

Because it was best to start out on the right foot.

"I said it before and I will say it again," Alanna responds. "Bar is very smart."

Relaxing, she shakes the proffered hand and smiles, then gestures to an empty chair.

"You look very much like an acquaintance of mine. It gave me a start. As it is, I'm very pleased to make your acquaintance, Domino, and glad that you are not her. I'm Alanna, and I suppose if you saw the note then you know the rest."
