Never ever

I'm back from my weddings vacation! It's not that I got married (since I already am), but that we attended two out-of-town weddings: one in Colorado Springs followed by a flight halfway around the world to France.

With all that travel, I at least was able to get a lot of drama-watching done. I simultaneously started Ever Night and The Untamed. After 12 episodes, I decided to drop Ever Night.

I felt a little sad about dropping Ever Night because 1/4 of the drama has a lot of potential. But the plot of other 3/4 was just so bad.

The general story is about a fabled Child of Hades (not the Greek god, but probably Chinese equivalent) that is prophesied to bring about ever night - which I'm assuming is supposed to be all terrible and everything. Based on spoilers on the internet, ***spoilers*** the main character is supposed to be this Child of Hades ***end spoilers***

An umbrella, probably to keep out all that ever...sun.

That makes an interesting story since it makes the main character a likely antagonist and I like twists like that. But when the story is not about the main character doing stuff to avenge his slain family, it's about:

1) Court intrigue. Some prince is upset that he's not the emperor even though he got the Emperor's Sword. So he's plotting against the actual emperor and his children.

2) Chinese Hogwarts. As if family revenge wasn't compelling enough, we have an added plot of the main character trying to get into Chinese Hogwarts. So on top of the revenge plotline, we have to deal with school bullies (why? The main character literally kills people as a hobby? Why would bullies affect him?), classism, and the main character probably eventually becoming awesome in terms of magic on top of already being pretty good in martial arts.

3) Child of Light. This whole plot seem to have little to nothing to do with anything else in the drama. I mean, maybe they'll eventually tie it into the main plot. But for 12 episodes, it's just this guy moping around in the northern waste being a Child of Light. He looks kind of dickish with his lack of expression. So maybe he's the villain. Who knows.

Yikes! Are we sure he's a Child of Light? More like a vampire than anything.

So when I found myself nodding off while watching the episodes and wishing I had free wifi to stream The Untamed instead, I decided to drop Ever Night. As much as I like the main character and his cocky ways, I just can't stand everything else.

And I love dual-wielding characters!

I also like his hair. It's like they finally realized they can use part of the actor's real hair and supplement with extensions instead of the horrible face-lift wigs China loves.

Too bad the plot and acting from the older actors are so terrible (except Leon Lai - but that's only because he's so likably derpy in my eyes after watching him in Race the World).

I guess one doesn't really need to strive to be better when one is already a Heavenly King.

And that's a shame because 3/4 of the drama has really good production value. Which, again, makes it seem like the whole Child of Light segment was shot for an unrelated, smaller budget drama. The fight choreography is "good", in the sense that it's better than most fights in recent Chinese drama, but still bad in comparison to older dramas and movies with actual good fight choreography.

I guess I'll just be cautiously watching The Untamed...cautious, because I don't want to watch too fast and have to wait for new episodes to come out.

Oh, and Meng Ziyi (Legend of the Condor Heroes (2017)) is also in both dramas. Is she always wearing red in every single one of her dramas?

Legend of the Condor Heroes.

Ever Night.

The Untamed.

Maybe it's in her contract. But whatever, she looks good in red so I'm happy to see her in all the dramas I watch.

chinese drama, vacation, drama, drama series, real life
