Would it be surprising to learn that I really didn't listen to much music until I was a teenager? Probably the biggest source of music that I listened to up until then was my own piano playing (but I didn't listen to classical music, since I wasn't a total nerd) and watching drama. But asides from those, I didn't sit around and listen to music and my parents weren't big on playing music in the household.
So I guess drama song it is and the most memorable to me is a set of songs from a 1986 drama about Consort Yang. The songs were sang by Delphine Tsai but set to lyrics based on an old-timey poem by Bai Juyi about the consort. This is one out of probably 10-15 songs from the drama.
For one thing, this drama taught me classical Chinese poetry, though I didn't know it at the time. I probably just thought they're nice songs that go with the drama. But to this day, I probably still remember some parts of the poem, making me not seem like a total n00b when it comes to Chinese culture.
For another, I was so into this set of songs when I was a kid. Probably my earliest aspiration was to be a consort. Lol! I wonder what my parents thought of that?
