Matt 26 -
36Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
52“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”
Matt. 27 -
21“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

Jesus experienced so much pain. Luke 22:14 says, "And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground." Jesus suffered. He knew what was about to happen to Him. He knew how terrible it would be. Yet He said to God, "YOUR WILL BE DONE." Why? Because of His love for you and me. He knew dying on the cross was the only way for us to spend eternity with Him. So He did it.

The people chose Barabbas, a criminal, over Jesus, the Christ. [!]
---
Jesus was flogged. Sometimes people didn't even SURVIVE the flogging. They beat Jesus until He wasn't even recognized as a human being. That's how awful it was.

John 19:30 - Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

JESUS DID THIS FOR YOU.
