The joy of a grandparent

I love being a grandmother! Yesterday, after a very pleasant morning with old_cutter_john (as usual), we picked up my mother and went to Lurkuu's eighth birthday party. It was amazing how well twenty chidren got along together for those few hours. The parents enjoyed sitting around chatting and munching. Unfortunately, Sarai was not feeling well and was crying when we arrived. Kiki said she'd had been crying and having temper tantrums all morning and neither parent could console her for long. Besides that, they were busy trying to prepare for the party. So I picked Sarai up and hugged her and walked around with her until she stopped crying, and then played with her both in the playroom and in the back yard for most of the party. Kiki came to us in the playroom and said she felt guilty because I wasn't getting a chance to join the party; at the same time she said she was now able to relax a little because Sarai wasn't crying any more. I told her I was really enjoying myself, being a grandmother. She brought a plate of food to the floor of the playroom, and Sarai had fun alternately eating food from the plate and feeding me with a plastic fork. It was a delightful few minutes.

Sarai and I did get to see Lurkuu blow out the number eight candle and begin to open his presents. The opening of the presents was a wonderful time of seeing how much Lurkuu has grown up. He sat on the recliner between two boys squeezed on either side of him, the other children sitting on the floor in front of him. In previous years, the chidren would each try to give him a present which he would quickly unwrap. This time the chidren sat quietly while he chose a present and before opening it, took out the card and read each one out loud, with the other two boys looking over his shoulder. Wow! Beautiful!
