I love LA for its diversity, but this is just ridiculous.
I have three pairs of pants I need hemmed so I'm trying to find a seamstress or tailor in the area. I'm looking on YellowPages.com. The first three places I called answered the phone, "Hello," which is so unprofessional. I had to ask if I had the right place. The first guy said they only do alterations directly from the factory. Okay. The next two women barely spoke English. I couldn't understand them and they couldn't understand me. I gave up on the first one after she started speaking to me in Spanish. I just said I had the wrong number and hung up. The second one finally managed to tell me the owner wasn't in.
The fourth place I called the phone rang four times, it sounded like someone picked up, and then I heard Spanish TV or radio in the backgroud, then a beep.
Seriously, I love how many different cultures and languages are present in LA, but if you're running a business you or whoever answers your phone needs to answer the phone professionally AND be able to speak English! After the third call when I got off the phone I actually shouted, "Learn to speak ENGLISH!" I am so far from being xenophobic, but this is frustrating.
ETA: Yea I found someone who speaks English! It only took five tries! She had some sort of accent of course, but she spoke English!
