It was pretty rediculous how little support Kerry got from the left. I thought he was a good candidate very pragmatic, moderate, and subtle, but the media really crucified him; including the 'liberal' establishments. There seemed to be a lot of combined ego attached to predicting his loss (as he was a pragmatist rather then purely idealogical) and I think he had a really good senate record but not enough people seem to understand how congress works. They naturally are going to have a pretty muddied record because they vote on a lot of different issues bundled together in the same bills.

I really blame a lot of the culture of protest and ego for this because they refused to back someone who put his neck on the line for them. It really does matter quite a lot who votes someone into office because a lot of the really important side-benefits of being the party in power's base come later, out of the spotlight of national politics. That's the stuff that really matters but no one even pays attention to any of it.
