Marist LAN Party

Apr 16, 2003 01:31

Well, it's been a while since a serious update, so I guess I'll get to it.

Saturday was the Marist semesterly gaming tournament/LAN Party. I woke up at like 1:30, packed my computer into the jeep, and drove off. I got to the cabaret and Ben and Matt had saved me a spot across from them. It rocked. Dave offered to help me carry my stuff in, so we went out to the car to get the heavy stuff. Since he was doing me a favor, I said I would get the heavier of the two, my monitor. He said, "Nah, let's shoot for it." Not to turn down a challenge, we did. "Rock, Paper, Scissors SHOOT!" Tie, damnit. "Rock, Paper, Scissors SHOOT!" I win. Dave gets monitor, I get PC, we return to cabaret.

I set up, and Tom asked me if I could get my TV. To shorten the story, an hour later, Carlo, Bob, and I returned an hour later with TV, Gamecube, PS1, Multitap, and Bomberman Party (a fight).

I returned to my designated table and finished my PC setup. After a bit of confusion, it appeared that JoeCool had set up the Unreal Tournament 2003 server so that it didn't matter which version we were running. Good stuff. The UT2K3 tournament was the first I played in. The problem was, I didn't know we were playing yet. It was a 25 minute, most frags battle. I was having fun, then Corbo called me about 8 minutes in for the DOA3 Singles tournament. I disconnected from Unreal, and played and won. Then I went back and reconnected and resumed. With only 13 minutes of play time, I accumulated 29 frags. I was like, 15 kills behind Brad, and 20 behind second place. Had I stayed in the game the whole time, I am sure I could've gotten second place at least. Ah well.

After the DOA tournament came the DOA Tag tournament. I grabbed Goth Steve as my partner and we had the fricking CLOSEST match I have ever seen. We lost 1st round by a little bit, won second round by a little bit, the third was SO intense. Steve and I do so well, and took down the first enemy to almost nothing in a matter of seconds. We tagged in and out often. Then, the other guy finally got in and took Steve way down with hard punches from Bayman. Steve tagged me in and I fought him down to nothing as well. The other guy came back in slightly healthier and wore us down a little, but then I killed him. As Bayman came back, I tagged in Steve. He fought, but eventually died. I came in and actually pulled off a counter attack. I was happy. We fought such a low-energy-bar battle, but I lost by one hit. I was so surprised. Nick and Rick were standing watching and both exclaimed in amazement at our incredible first-round showing.

I lost GGXX really quickly. Unlike last year where I was undefeated leading into the finals with Gargos, then fell. First round defeat to BRICK who use Sol's Viper attack relentlessly. It really didn't matter because two "mystery meat" players as they came to be called, totally schooled everyone in the end. SO......

I played Diablo 2 with Matt for like, 4 hours. It was so classic and relaxing. We might play more in the future. During my frantic Diablo-fest, Briana showed up. She didn't seem interested in D2, so she caught up with old friends for a while. Eventually, Diablo lost its flavour, and I stopped. A new Unreal 2003 server opened up. Briana wanted to play, so I let her use my machine. I was so surprised, she went for like, 2 hours straight. In the meantime I wandered, got food, played random games, and OWNED people at Def Jam Vendetta. Not a single loss, even in a 3-on-1 handicap match. I guess that's expected since it was my game and I am probably the only one there to have played it previously.

At 1 AM, the Bushido Blade tournament started up in the corner. I won first round, then had a 2nd round by, getting me straight to the semi-finals. I played some kid who got off to a 3-1 lead. I caught up. Then I battled to a 10-4 victory. The kid was like, "Damn, if anyone asks, it was 9-10, all right?" PSsh, yeah whatever. I played fencing Mike in the finals and beat him handily. He had skill, but it was no match for my mighty Utsusumi katana style. I won a pretty cool Alienware visor for that. I don't really wear visors, but I might start.

That was probably the last eventful thing I did at the tournament. Briana finished UT2K3 at about that point too. We wandered for a bit. Around 3 I packed up my PC, and loaded up the car. Carrying both my monitor and TV to the car was so NOT fun, but necessary.

In all, I was very impressed with this year's tournament. Unlike last year when Corbo and Tom and various MCAS officers fronted the prize gift-certificated to Best Buy, there were official sponsors. This kid who was in my class last semester hooked everyone up. I praise Mike Anstadt for this. Not only did he get Gamestop, NVidia, Nintendo, Alienware, and various other companies to donate to us, he got random sponsors like BAWLS. It was so funny, because at first Rick kept saying over the microphone that we were sponsored by "balls" and I thought it was a joke. About an hour later, I looked up and noticed a poster for "Bawls caffeinated beverage." Man, was I wrong. The stuff came in a cool looking blue bottle, and had so much caffeine that there was a warning on it. I don't drink caffeine, but I took a sip, and it was pretty bad. It made Rob "dead", as he called it, from a sick caffeine high followed by a hard crash. Anyway, big props to Mike for getting all that stuff. Plus, he always has hoodies on for devcent bands.

Next year I will have to make it a point to win more than one tournament. Of course, I only entered 4 tournaments, so that was part of it too. My wrath shall be felt by Marist once more before I graduate.
