Adventures in Batchelorism: The Walking Girl

May 06, 2010 11:02

Since yesterday's weather was so FSM damned amazing, I decided to do the unthinkable and walk home from work. I had no idea how long it would take, (52 minutes, for the record,) but I estimated the distance of the trek at 55 streets.

Around 30th street, I noticed a cute girl keeping pace with me. Occasionally she'd glide ahead, sometimes I would take the lead, but we'd catch up at the next illuminated "do not cross" sign. Throughout this start-and-stop journey, we had exchanged glances and smiles born of formality. Right around 20th street, I decided to take off my headphones and at least say something; it didn't have to be clever, witty, or flirtatious, but we had shared so much that it had earned remark. Just as I hit pause on the Zune and turned my head to the right, she was stepping through the entrance of a deli.

I let out a sigh that seemed to say, "Safe travels, walking girl," and I kept walking. She would have wanted it that way.
