i have lots of thoughts, opinions, feelings and etc. about The Riots, yes? but i also feel like - maybe? - reblogs on tumblr: sometimes not the absolute best way to get at the necessary nuances. YES. NUANCES OF UNDERSTANDING ARE NECESSARY HERE. (if i could work out where the "hash" sign is on a mac keyboard i would also have something to say about ( Read more... )

I have read so much crap from the hang'em-flog-'ems and from the hang-wringing lefties, it would be nice to hear the opinion of a sane person. No, sane isn't the right word... I'll go with 'intelligent' instead.

I have been reading a bit about riots for my essay - the formation of the Metropolitan Police was a reaction to rioting and fears that the propertied classes were living in fear of the increasing masses of poor people who were coming to mess with their shit, or so they assumed.

So I can see the bigger picture with regards poverty, it just doesn't make me particularly sympathetic to people attacking people's homes and livelihoods.

Just linked to this above, but it's worth repeating http://rosamicula.livejournal.com/540476.html - very sane opinions from someone who teaches in these areas

THIS.

THIS.

The middle-class handwringing and apologeticism and calls from people to call in the army? NO WORDS. And those PRAY FOR LONDON signs. Did we even have a PRAY FOR X meme before the tsunami? ANGRY THIPE IS ANGRY.

(Vauxhalls still unaffected. Though some behoodie'd youths did hang briefly around on the corner for a bit trying to look menacing (though mainly looking confused) before the parked lorry driver put his lights on full beam.)

PRAY FOR X meme
I read that as 'PRAY FOR X men'

Someone on a LJ com I frequent said something along the lines of 'the dehumanising language being used is upsetting me more than the riots'. OH SHUT UP. Maybe if your home was being attacked you might use a little bit of dehumanising language. Yes we need to look at why a pretty wealthy first world country have allowed such poverty to spawn this kind violent behaviour, but ffs, you can't blame people for being angry.

This 'pray for' shit is deeply disturbing. I started watching a documentary about American god-botherers and Harry Potter last night but it made me too angry. I hope that particularly insane brand of Christianity stays where it it.

You need to start wearing your cape when you go out.

It's mostly the comments about how this demonises the youth element OR calling for the army/SAS to be called in from the Daily Mail side that wind me up. Sadly this is a high high proportion.

That said It turns out that the thugs of Manchester are just as bad as the thugs in the rest of the country but take 2 days longer to organise themsleves. did make me chuckle.

Heh, oh yes, there's been that too. Though my intake of right-wing batshittery has mainly been provided by Victorian newspapers this week ( ... )

Send that into the Daily Mail readers letters section, see if it gets published?
