Summary: An unexpected meeting during lunch period is the start of a new friendship, or so it seems...
Goku finally sat down at the lunch table, food tray in one hand and bookbag on the other; the latter was dropped immediately, and both hands took on the task of dealing with what was on the former. Sure, some people complained about school food but when you were hungry, you were hungry.
"Damn...Nii's creepy," he remarked to the few people who shared the table in-between bites of the not-quite-burger. "I mean, what kinda grown man has a fuckin' stuffed bunny in his classroom? Had him last period, and I swear he must have a camera in that thing or something. Always hanging over everyone's shoulder with it..."
Yaone looked around the cafeteria for an empty table; she was never one for sitting with people. She knew she shouldn't have stayed to talk to Professor Nii after class as long as she did. She lingered around near the door, debating if she should eat again in the girls restroom. "I'm just so tired of doing that," she thought. She cautiously took a few more steps into the cafeteria and after grabbing her tray of food she found a table with only a few people at it. She walked up to a boy and as she sat her tray on the table she smiled faintly and asked, "Is anyone sitting here? You were in my class last period... I just... Hi. Is anyone sitting here?"
Goku's train of thought changed tracks instantly. A familiar face was a good thing, he supposed, especially if it was friendly. Almost seriously, though he was joking, he asked, "Are we invisible?"
Then again, not everyone has his sense of humor. Hurriedly, Goku added, "'Cause, you know, we're sitting here, and you asked-- Yeah, if you want to eat lunch with us, it's fine."
"You have no skill with the ladies, man," one of his friends teased.
"Shut up..."
Yaone laughed almost out of force as she blushed and began to stutter, "I just... I'm sorry. She looked down at the rest of the table and smiled. "Empty chairs, I didn't know if you were waiting for someone. Everyone seems to know everyone here."
She pulled out the chair and sat down, "You're... Goku right? I'm Yaone."
She smirked as she leaned in and whispered, "You know... Professor Nii really isn't that bad. Maybe I spend too much time there but I like his class a lot." She sat back and began eating her salad. "Has anyone had one of these before? I'm kind of afraid to try it." She laughed again, more naturally.
"Can't see why you'd say that. I still think he's creepy," Goku protested. "But whatever. Had one of those salads last week, they're not that bad. As long as you're not expecting something great to begin with..."
He took a few more bites of his lunch. She seemed more familiar than someone he knew from a class or two, but he was reluctant to speak both because he suspected it would sound strange and his friends would probably laugh at his social skills. Again.
The master of conversations he was not.
She nodded and laughed, "Thank you. A lot of people don't like him. And occasionally I get that 'creepy' feeling too, I just shrug it off. He's an excellent professor and extremely intelligent. Anyway..." She paused and began eating her lunch. "Hmm... Not bad. That's a relief. I had a horrible sandwich a while ago. I think I might turn vegetarian."
She looked down at the rest of the table, who were chatting away, mostly about people and places she didn't know. She looked back to Goku and blurted out, "Why don't you talk as much? You seem that you would be the overly talkative type." She covered her mouth in shock with her hands. "I'm so sorry," she mumbled through her hands. "I didn't mean to be so blunt."
"V-vegetarian?" Goku asked loudly, shocked. "You can't be serious! I mean, there's so much meat out there, it's like... Like... Swearing off oxygen or something!"
One might accuse a faint blush of tainting his skin for a moment, but he tried to cover his embarassment by continuing to talk.
"That is, I mean, it's okay. I talk all the time, just not in front of everyone. Nobody listens when I wanna say something, and whenever they do listen, they just overhear something stupid. No point talking to people who just wanna laugh."
Yaone lowered her hands and began to laugh loudly, "Well, I don't know... I should give it a try. Couldn't hurt, right? And if I start getting in too deep, you'll make sure I get back on the meat wagon, right?"
She pushed her tray to the side and sat her elbows on the table, "I hope it's okay if I tell you something, opening up a little, if you will. If you ever feel the need to talk to someone, I know we don't know each other all that well, but I'll listen. And it takes a lot for me to laugh. I think. But honestly, I know how hard it must be to not have someone to talk to..."
"Meat wagon, huh..." Goku paused to consider the concept. "Sounds like a plan to me."
It was really rare, he thought, for someone to speak with him like this. The rest of the table continued with their own chatting, perfectly ignorant of what was going on between the two of them, and the teen was glad. He could stand to hang out with them, but they sure weren't good friends. Not a single one even admitted to seeing the last fight he was in, and some kid he didn't even know ended up bailing him out...
"Thanks," he replied, a bit startled at how serious she seemed. A shaky grin spread across his face. "And I'll be here for you, too."
She tilted her head and looked at Goku, smiling. She laughed to herself, "Excellent. And if you need any help with studies, I can help with that too. Not trying to make myself sound like a know-it-all... but... I do love learning and I've helped a few other students too..."
She paused and broke the eye-contact as she looked down at her tray. While still looking away she said, "You know... thanks for talking to me. Normally no one does. I've actually been eating in the bathroom... Embarrassed because I didn't know anyone, I guess." She subconsciously scratched her head and laughed again.
"Eating in the bathroom?" Goku asked. "That can't help the taste... I hope you're not gonna do that again, because I'll make you sit here if I have to!"
Maybe that sounded a bit extreme. But he was sure that he got his point across.
"I think I'm doing okay in that ... guy's class, but if you could, you know, put in a good word for me..."
Yaone rolled her eyes, "I normally bring my lunch, so it's not so bad..." She paused, "Honest. I'm serious. It's not that bad." She sat there and sighed, "Okay, I hated it. And I truly appreciate the fact that you would enjoy my presence here. I can't thank you enough."
She shifted in her seat a little as she continued, "You're actually doing well in Nii's class? Over half the class is failing. Not that I was assuming, just throwing the idea out there. And of course, anyone who is as nice as you are deserves a good word put in. Maybe you'll get some extra credit or something. OH OH OH! I know!" She began to laugh a little louder, "Or maybe you can hold the bunny!"
"I dunno..." he mumbled. "I don't think he'd want his students feeling up his little friend..."
The thought was definitely amusing. Goku snorted as he tried to keep his laughter inside, but failed miserably. Within moments, he was glad that he wasn't drinking any milk; it would surely have gone right out his nose.
"If he gave...extra credit...for playing with the bunny... Nobody'd make fun of it anymore..." he added as he tried to get his breath back.
"You know, I think you're right. Perhaps I should propose that to him, but I doubt he'd allow multiple fondlings of his precious bunny."
She looked at Goku, who was still laughing. "You aren't going to give yourself an asthma attack, are you? Please don't pass out, I don't have that good of a handle on CPR yet. Because I doubt that anyone here besides that disturbing lunch lady over there would know... and I doubt that she even does."
She felt her face flush as she started laughing again, reminding herself of the image of random students touching Nii's bunny. "I must say, I truly don't think Nii would want anyone doing that. He normally doesn't even let go of the thing. Have you heard him talk in the creepy bunny voice yet? I walked in on it today before class... Oh, I hate talking bad about him, but sometimes I just get this feeling that it's deserved. I don't know why though. Sorry, I shouldn't be rambling like this. But do you know what I mean?" Her voice trailed off quickly.
"Fondling the bunny..." Goku's laughter only increased until he thought he actually might pass out.
Deep breath after deep breath. Don't think about the stuffed animal, don't think about the teacher, don't think about anything...
Finally able to think straight and talk properly, Goku admitted, "Yes! He came up behind me during the last test and said something that way, and I almost jumped outta the seat!"
She laughed as she looked at the clock on the wall, "AH! Almost time for class. I still need to run back to my locker to get my books. Where are you headed next?"
"Math." He made a throat-slitting gesture, stood up, and took a few steps in the opposite direction before turning back briefly. "Guess I'll see ya later. 'Bye!"
