I have a list called "Movies I would like to own," and several of the items on the list are there because they haven't been released in America yet. So today I was checking to see if one of them is still unreleased. Well, it turns out it's available here... but at what cost to dignity? (For reference, the original poster art that got me to see it ( Read more... )

Remember that "movies I would like to own" is specifically movies that I either want to show to other people or just think are really pretty (probably because of the costumes). I don't necessarily recommend them to the general pulic. :P

True Stories
The Baker
Delicatessen
City of Lost Children
Brand Upon the Brain
Stilyagi
The Fall
Bronson
I Served the King of England
The Orange Thief
and, ahem, Tipping the Velvet

In case you're curious, the companion list, "Movies to Rent," (which specifically only includes movies that my local DVD rental place has) goes like this:
Schizopolis
Bob le Flambeur
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ...And Spring
Taste of Tea, The (Cha no aji)
That Obscure Object of Desire (maybe)
The Time Machine
Tuvalu
8 1/2
The Puffy Chair
My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done
Spirits of the Dead (Histoires Extraordinaires)
Divine Intervention (Yadon ilaheyya)
My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done
Eyes Wide Shut
Ran
Fitzcarraldo
President's Analyst, The
La Jetée
What's Up Tiger Lily

Hm, a couple of reasons, I guess. One is that I don't particularly see any reason to do so -- a text file on my computer is a lot easier for me to access than a thing that I have to be logged into a website to see. (And I'd have to have an Amazon account.) Second, I don't like to make it too easy for myself to buy things, and movies are pretty solidly in the category of things I do not need to own. Third and relatedly, sometimes simply acknowledging to myself that I would like to own something (confirming, "yes, this is one of those movies") is almost as consumer-pleasure-center tripping as actually purchasing it. Likewise, I am usually able to almost circumvent wanting to purchase particular clothes/paintings/whatever by taking pictures of them. (Because it's not that I want to actually have that thing in my closet, it's that I want to be able to remember it. However, that did mean that the loss of large chunks of my "inspiration" folder when my hard drive crashed made me especially sad.)
