The amateur; what a loathsome position it must be. Free from the constraints of popularity and the common consensus, the amateur works on. Un-phased by the shallow and ignorant tastes of their prospective markets, the amateur works on. The amateur needn't rob the graves of the classical masters, nor play lap dog to the market, nor run the errands of the dead. The amateur is able to create for creations sake. The amateur's creations are beyond the whims of the herd. The creations of these antagonized and lowly amateurs are expressions of purely individual passions and urges. Unaffected by past styles, by present pretension, or by the hope of sales, the amateur works on. The professional must work for money, therefore, in order to attain that money, he must give way to the market. He may have to sacrifice his own creative impulse merely to sell, or he may have to fulfill the aesthetic senses of others besides himself. Is there any worse punishment then to be forced to silence our own passions in order to please the customer?

I would write a dissertation here on a certain Nietzschean theory (even though much earlier traces of the theory can be found in most Eastern philosophies and in the work Schopenhauer) about the topography of wills and what-not, but it is late, and this young boy needs his rest desperately. We already talked about it anyway.

p.s.- I really do need to make you some more Cd's. I've tapped into the immense musical treasury known as the down-town public library and I have gotten a few choice LP's. I'll get to that sooner then later.
