I'd forgotten how good R.E.M.'s first four albums are. I pulled them out for the first time in a while about a week ago and holy shit they're amazing. Murmur (their first album) is just about perfect, and Life's Rich Pageant is pretty damn good (although not as good as Murmur). But I seem to have lost my copy of Fables of the Reconstruction, which is disappointing, because I've always liked that one and I was in the mood to listen to it last night. Oh well. Anyways, I can't believe how good this stuff is and how I can listen to the Rosebuds or the Shins without acknowledging the debt they hold to these albums.
