an extremley likely secenario:
The year is around 2025, and oil is at its most expensive price yet as awareness of the scarcity of oil spreads. All types of fuel, advanced agriculture and a majority of world energy suppliants become expensive for most to use. A major economical depression ensues among all oil-dependant contries. Lesser developed countries, especially those in sub-saharan Africa and far east Asia break out into both inter-national war and civil war as they compete for necessary items - food, water, medecine, clothing. From both the wars and the lack of necessary items, the population in africa and asia dwindles. The economically advanced countries struggle to use alternate sources of energy - nuclear and reusable (windmills, dams, solar etc) - as power within large cities stays out for months and all major types of transportation become too expensive for the averge person to afford. Bicycles, walking and animal-assisted modes of transportation become the standard. Military effectiveness accross the globe diminishes greatly. A global depression akin to the great depression of the 1920's and 30's ravages the world for decades while major countries attempt to sever their dependency on oil. And all the while, global warming related disasters leave entire cities destroyed with little help.
Oil is not just the gas in your car and the lubricant in your hinges. Almost every modern object we use relies on oil of some sort. Light bulbs, wrapping material, agriculture, computers, fuel, factories, miltary, energy - and oil is likely to reach its halfway point of abundancy within the next 10 to 40 years. Once that halfway point comes and goes, expect everything you know to change. Oil is running out fast, and this affects all of you as life expectancy continues to rise.
What is our government doing about this prospect? Nothing.
330 million tax dollars went in to crashing something into a comet. That could've been used to fund alternate sources of energy, reduce global warming, rebuild ghettos or fund the decaying US medical system.
200 billion have gone into fighting a war most oppose, whose cause of finding and destroying WMDs was not fulfiled. That could've fed and medicated poor africans and asians for years, with millions to spare for funding a switch to renewable energy sources and reducing global warming.
Instead, our Conservatuive Adminstration has done the previous, is wasting more on useless research, propaganda and militarial funding, and is pushing for the destruction of the Alaskan environment to drill for oil, which could potentially disrupt the glacial environment around it and further global warming.
What do we need to do? Make this issue apparent to the people of the world. Make this issue apparent to the next contenders for the US Presidency. Just make this issue apparent, and prepare for a grim future.
We need to sever our dependency on oil soon, or we are going to suffer for a long, long time.
