I see Livejournal is messing with stuff again. I haven't had the option to try the new friends page and I don't particularly want it, but I'm sure it'll be foisted on me soon. Along with ads, apparently? My paid account doesn't expire until next September, which is beyond the point they're apparently planning to "take away" paid accounts, so... I don't know. I do know most of my icon packages are expiring later this month, I think, and I haven't really decided what to do. On one hand, BUT I'VE SPENT SO LONG COLLECTING SO MANY NICE ICONS. On the other hand, my flist is a ghost town, it's only getting worse, and if LJ really is taking away paid features and all this other stuff I don't really know if I will need or want the privilege of 200+ jpgs on this site. I dunno. It's not like I have much disposable income with my ~funemployment~ right now.
Livejournal, you make me sad. I don't want you to die. I like to have discussions that aren't in reblog format. WHAT IF I EVER WRITE FIC AGAIN? WHERE WILL I POST IT? Boooooo.
In unrelated news,
It was pretty cute/fun - definitely silly in a lot of places but since it’s aimed for pretty young kids, y’know … fine. Also Gwendoline Christie is in it, unexpectedly? SURRPISE.
I started writing this thinking I had more to say but I guess I don’t. Like I said, it was fun and cute for the most part. The spells in particular sound a bit ridiculous, but it’s for kids and also I’m probably just part of a generation that can’t accept any magic as real that isn’t Harry Potter magic. I thought the two leads were quite likable, especially Muggle friend Benny, who for example described the… magic… closet… cavern… as “like Narnia, Tim Burton style”. It seems like the relationships will have some heart to them.
My main complaint with it was that there needs to be more girl characters - Gwendoline Christie is a warrior alien lady and the main character has a lovable grandma who is also a witch, and there was a female student for like 2 seconds, but that’s about it so far, as compared to main dude, main dude’s bro, main dude’s father, warrior alien dude, alien king, hobgoblin and the other wizard/son duo (who were one-offs, but dudes nonetheless). It feels like something that would easily be branded a “boy show” - which of course does not mean girls can’t/wouldn’t watch it, but rather that you get the impression it’s little boys who are going to be the target audience and any little girls watching will be a bonus.
It was only the first story though, so that might change, I guess. Hopefully.
I never posted about last week's TV but I liked all of it especially Elementary which was fab and my favourite episode yet hooray.
Did anyone but me, Tay and Hannah bother watching the s4 premiere of Misfits? I have a lot of thoughts but I'm not sure I want to type them all out for an audience of 0.
I thought it was pretty brutal. I knew it would be weird to adjust to a brand new cast, but I think I underestimated how keenly I would feel the loss of Kelly and maybe even Simon and Alisha. On one hand, I'm glad they fired Lauren Socha's racist ass. On the other hand, it's becoming readily apparent that Kelly was my favourite character and the show doesn't have the same intrigue for me without her. PS: lol @ her fixing landmines in Uganda.
Beyond that, I'm SO PRESSED that fucking SETH is still around. Write his boring ass out of this show omg I don't care that everyone wants to bone Matthew McNaulty GO WATCH THE SYNDICATE WHICH WAS ACTUALLY GOOD AND WHERE HE WAS ACTUALLY INTERESTING. I hated Seth last year for being as interesting as watching paint dry, and I'm ESPECIALLY pressed that he's still around now even with Kelly gone AND with poor Curtis, THE ONLY ORIGINAL CAST MEMBER, having about 2 lines. Why couldn't they reverse Curtis and Seth in this episode, so Seth spends most of it in the freezer? Ugh. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett is so ill-treated by this show, tbh.
Rudy, meanwhile, had some funny bits ("sweet or savory? it's man's eternal dilemma") but he's not enough to carry the show for me.
The two new kids were eh. I want to like the new girl, but I am super annoyed that she was THE ONLY DAMN WOMAN IN THE ENTIRETY OF THIS EPISODE, WTF?? Way too many dicks on this dancefloor. And her power is so boring and obviously was designed to be useful in this one singular episode to kickstart the plot. Meanwhile Finn has the COOLEST POWER (even if he sucks at it), but oh yeah HE'S A CRAZY RAPIST.
The plot was a mess also. I get that it was meant to be a bit of a riff on the unreliable-narrator type movie, but it didn't work super well and was just a bad idea for a premiere ep I think.
All in all I think I might give this show one more episode to bring me on board before I cut my losses. TBH I think it will depend a lot on how they deal with the Finn/Sadie stuff. If I am expected to sympathize with Finn keeping a woman tied up in his bedroom and raping her, we're done.
