tangled/rapunzel/that disney movie with the hair

Tania and I went to see Tangled last night because watching Disney movies and eating ice cream out of the tub is our thing~.

I thought all of the promo material for this movie was awful. Awful title wank and awful, awful trailers with terrible music (Pink? REALLY?) and disappointing computer animation. But when it came out... Wednesday, was it? I had heard some good things so I was willing to give it a shot.

Anyway, I have to say that I didn't end up liking it that much. It wasn't bad, and it was very Princess-y, and I thought Rapunzel was adorable and yeah, the movie was all about her, not Flynn, contrary to the marketing techniques. Although I still think that computer animation lacks the Disney magic, I admit that it was very gorgeous (aside from the people -- I didn't like the way people were rendered that much) although the version I watched had lots of imperfections in the film that took away from it.

But the musical numbers were meh and I was disappointed because Alan Menken is supposed to be the greatest; I liked the music in Princess and the Frog much more. Actually, I liked everything about Princess and the Frog much more and I thought it was much closer to the Disney renaissance in feel and style and story than Tangled was, and I'm sad that Tangled will probably do much better commercially than Frog (and that no one seemed to like Princess and the Frog anyway).

I think what killed Tangled for me was just that it wasn't very funny. I rewatched Toy Story 3 with my parents on Friday and that movie is hilarious. The Disney/Pixar movies are great at appealing to both the kids and the older audiences; Tangled didn't balance this as well, though I will say that the kids in our theatre were cracking the hell up so I guess it worked for the younger/target audience.

So the basic run-down:

Bad Things:
  • I found the villain sort of ...blah. Her song was so not awesome enough to be a Disney villain song. Her manipulation of Rapunzel was creepy, but IDK she wasn't badass enough.
  • I was kind of sad that her hair got cut. I mean, I see why, and blah blah people will use her for her hair blah blah... but it felt like ~a part of her~ so I wasn't sure how I felt about it being cut off. Also I couldn't unsee her being Mandy Moore once she was brunette.
  • Like I said, the music was not as epic as I was expecting from Alan Menken.
  • Still wish it was 2D.

Good Things:
  • The hair animation was so well done omg. That one bit where she just lets her hair dangle out of the tower and it sways in the wind? So cool.
  • Rapunzel was so cute, and OMG Pascal! Adorable!
  • Though I miss 2D animation and am meh on how they rendered the people, the scenery/etc was gorgeous. That lantern scene was amazing.
  • The scene where Rapunzel flips back and forth between being elated with leaving the tower and feeling terrible about betraying her mom was probably the funniest part.
  • "THIS IS THE STORY OF HOW I DIED" made me lol. I've head this one before!

In conclusion, it wasn't bad, and it'll probably be a hit with kids which is who they're aiming for. But I thought it was just that -- okay. Anyway, all it really made me want to do was rewatch Princess & The Frog, lol.

Has my lj turned into me just reviewing random media I consume? Apparently.
