SO I actually had a pretty good day which is nice after feeling grumpy all week. Here is some stuff.
I. Continuing my Pullman binge and so
placebetween doesn't disown me, I'm reading The Shadow in the North. I've only got maybe 40 pages left but I have to post about this one traumatic event.
CHAKA OMG :(
Literally nothing in fiction makes me sadder than dogs dying. NOTHING. I still don't think Pullman is great at writing emotions, at least not emotions in a way that really resonates with me. I didn't care about virtually anything tragic that happened in HDM. I wouldn't care that much if Fred had fallen off a cliff. BUT HER DOG DYING TRAGICALLY AS IT TRIES TO PROTECT STRANGERBITCH ISABELLA? AND THEN WAITING UNTIL SHE IS THERE TO DIE OMG :( :( TEARS FOREVER
To put this in perspective, I, as you may have noticed, absolutely love Harry Potter. JKR's writing connects better than me with Pullman's and has the extra nostalgia factor. No tears, not ever. Not Sirius or Dobby or Dumbledore or The Forest Again. Doctor Who, as you also may have noticed, I also love. I didn't even tear up in Doomsday or End of Time. But Chaka dying? And She put her hand out for Chaka, and looked down for the warmth of his love and goodness, and there was nothing there? Omg I was reading this at lunch like
I knew this was coming the instant they introduced Chaka, because dogs in books meet traumatic ends. This is why I avoided books about dogs as a kid even though I loved them. Endless tragedy, omg.
II. In less traumatic news, I have tickets to Deathly Hallows tonight at 9:40! When we went to pick up the tickets yesterday, at around 8:30, there was already a line down the hall and around the door for the midnight show. Damnnn. Anyway, I'm super excited, because OMG HARRY POTTER :D and because almost all my high school friends are going and getting us all in the same room is a rare but glorious occurrence these days.
III. Lastly, look! A trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special! Wheee!
