drabble: should have beens

Apr 04, 2007 23:05

I am on some kind of hideous writing kick. It is simultaneously entertaining (for me) and pathetic (because I am a sad, sad person with no life).

On that note I think I need to put some kind of drabble-collection-thing on UR, but I can't think of a good title. Boourns.

Anyway, yeah. This one didn't turn out quite the way I wanted. Damn.

Title: Should-Have-Beens
Words: 173
Characters: Sirius, with mentions of Regulus and James
Rating: PG

When Regulus died, Sirius had blamed himself.

He had known, in some recess of logic somewhere in his mind, that he was not directly responsible. He had not cast the curse. He had known that in many ways it was more the fault of their parents, of Bellatrix and Narcissa and all the family members Regulus had always been so desperate to impress. He had known, furthermore, that in the end it had been Regulus’ decisions, Regulus’ mistakes, and ultimately Regulus’ fault.

Still, Sirius had not been able to shake the sense that he had failed, somehow. For reasons he could not quite explain, he felt he should have been there - should have tried harder - should have helped - should have stayed - should have been a better brother.

If he had, perhaps the kid would still be alive.

Staggering through the wreckage of Godric’s Hollow a year later, he finds the sensation is similar. When he finds James’ body and crumbles to his knees, he realizes that he has failed both of his brothers.

sirius black, james potter, regulus black, drabble
