Sometimes writers who fail to recognize the connotations of words can create sentences with unintended and inappropriate humor:
"The directions for this laxative are very irregular."
Wouldn't unusual work better than irregular?
Frequently, indavertant sexism is another result of problems with connotation:
"Brenda, I'm so happy that you're going to try to become an assemblyman."
For Brenda to do so will involve both (a) winning the election and (b) having a sex-change operation.
That's straight from my English book.
College textbooks kick the shit out of what I had in high school.
