The whir and click of computers was all she could hear beyond her own breathing. The white, sterile tiles above had no personality at all, but they strangely reminded the girl of home. Nothing but a white expanse of snow for miles. But not now. Now she had her arm strapped up to something, and there was a needle sticking in her arm, attached to a bag of water. At least - she thought it was water. Really hot water. You'd think the scientists would know now, after two years, how her body worked. How anything above ten degrees Celsius could burn her. But no.
Bell rolled over, and the cot creaked. How long had she been in this empty hospital room? To her, it seemed like an eternity. It had actually only been a single night, but when you just spent the last two years in suspended animation, everything seemed to take long. Hart could vaguely remember a man telling her that she'd fall asleep in her cold cocoon, and wake her up when she needed to be. It hadn't seemed like a bad idea then. But.. She hadn't realized she'd spend two years in the cryo tube. She thought it'd be five minutes, and then she'd get a free meal. Bell had been hungry then. Do you know what hunger is, and then not eating for two years? It hurts. But the hot water bag thing that was stuck in her arm seemed to be helping. Ah, the wonders of modern medicine.
Her silver eyes focused on two whirling balls of ice above her face. She'd been working on keeping them in the air for hours, and it was beginning to be hard. Every once and a while one would dip, or a crack would appear. Her eyes drooped, sleep coming onto her like a stealthy panther. Not that Bell knew what a panther was. She'd just learned english for goodness sakes. Oh wait - that had been two years ago. How time flies! As she finally began to drift off, one of the ice balls went AWOL. It slammed into the white tile beside her, making the sound glass makes when it shatters. White Hart sat bolt upright, startled, and unfortunately fully awake.
Would some one come after that sound?
