The instrument in reference is more likely either a kalimba or an mbira, rather than a marimba. The kalimba and mbira are percussive instruments native to the southern countries in Africa. The keys are made of metal and plucked with the fingernails which produces the "plinks" mentioned in the article. The marimba, however, is primarily made out of aged rosewood, and produces a much warmer tone than the metalic tone of the kalimba or mbira. Although the names of the instruments are phonetically similar, they are radically different in sound.
This might be a considered correction for the article. The eclectic nature of Vampire Weekend deserves it.
