"When compared to television for a general audience, children's networks in this study exposed young viewers to 76 percent more food commercials per hour than did the other networks, with the Saturday morning 7-10 a.m. time slot being more saturated with food commercials, the researchers explained in a statement."
I think it's funny that they made this study seem so significant. There are only so many commercials on tv, not all places can afford one. That and there are simply more places to eat versus places of other business. Same goes with the products themselves.
But that kinda goes besides the point of the study. The study states that programs run for children have more food commercials versus more adult oriented programs. Well come on, what kind of kid would see a commercial for, say, a furniture store and think, "Hmm, I think I'll tell my parents to shop there for a new couch." No, that is why those commercials are shown when statistically, more ADULTS will see it and possibly go to check out the deals in person. Food places always have a chance to catch a kid's attention, especially with kids meals and maybe even an arcade section or something. Now that, a child will offer when asked, "Where do you want to eat tonight?"
And then they worry that since most food places are unhealthy, obesity and other 'bad diet' related disease rates will just continue to raise. So to that, I say, TEACH your children to eat right so they don't crave the 'bad' foods meaning YOU have to eat right at home and not make going out to eat a thing to do like every other night of the week. And there are so many factors I could go into with this, one major thing being, "What if I don't have the time b/c I'm too tired from the workday to cook?" But I've already gone far enough with this and I really just wanted to rant about a small point, not the whole picture.
But then again, just to back up my point, since I have begun cooking at home and getting healthier foods versus what I ate growing up, my brother has had a good foundation when it comes to the 'healthier lifestyle'. He rarely, if ever, asks to eat at fast food places. Me on the other hand, grew up on Burger King and McDonalds. B/c of that, I developed gastritis and have had to suffer with it since I was 12. Now I have more control of it with diet change and medication. Not to blame my parents, they were extremely young with a baby and worked and got their degrees from college so they could only do so much about food. They just knew they had to feed me. But now seeing how my diet has affected my family and overall well being and just that my brother, watching ALLL the tv and cartoons and commercials, seeing how those food commercials dont affect him, well, that's why I feel my point above is reasonable and CAN be done.
Blah! Ok. I just wasted time on that random subject. I'm studying for an exam unrelated to food advertisements but I just saw the article online while taking a break and just went off on it. Hah. Oh and this, I just find hilarious:
"You can assume your kids see a food commercial every 8 minutes, sandwiched presumably between Bendaroos and, oddly, the Sham Wow guy."
Heck, sham wows do look awesome! It's like magic!
