Merry Christmas. I love you. <3

Please take down the mistletoe, cause I don't wanna think about that right now
Cause everything I want is miles away in a snow covered little town
Mama's in the kitchen worrying about me, seasons greetings hope you're well
I'm doing alright if you were wondering, lately I can never tell
I know this shouldn't be a lonely time, but there were Christmases when you were mine

Taylor let out a soft sigh, watching every person in her family be all about the Christmas cheer. But she just wasn’t into it. A year ago Joe was here with her. But not this year. This year it was just her. Taylor frowned. She’d do anything to go back to last Christmas. Joe had spent Christmas Eve with Taylor and her family, and Taylor got the chance to spend Christmas day with the Jonas family. A small smile came across her face as she thought about the memory. Although that smile quickly faded when she remembered that that wasn’t reality anymore. It was Christmas and she was home with her family. She knew she shouldn’t be lonely, but there were Christmases when Joe was hers. She couldn’t stand to think that he wouldn’t walk through that door this year. She didn’t want to think about how he was miles and miles away from her. It hurt too much.

“It’s Christmas, Taylor,” Joe chuckled, shaking his head at his girlfriend. “You’re not allowed to be grumpy.”

“I’m not grumpy,” Taylor complained. “I just wish you would tell me where we were going.” She said with a sigh.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, baby,” Joe shook his head. “It’s a surprise.”

Taylor rolled her eyes at him. Sure, she liked surprises, but why couldn’t he just tell her where they were going? That’s all she wanted to know. Taylor stared out the window as the sights around her were starting to get familiar. Then she looked over at Joe, who had a small smile on his face. “Joe,” She smiled, looking over at him.

He didn’t say anything; he just kept driving until they pulled into the parking lot. Near Taylor’s house was a small park that set up Christmas lights every year. It was Taylor’s favorite place to go during the holidays. She didn’t know how he knew about it, but she loved that he was taking her here. And just to their luck, there was a bed of perfect white snow upon the ground. “Your mom told me how much you loved this place. I thought it would be nice if we could see it together this year?” Joe asked, raising his eyebrow slightly.

Taylor let out a laugh, giving him a smile. “Of course,” She said, getting out of the car. She went over to him, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. Then she reached down, lacing their fingers together as she started to lead him off into the snowy winter wonderland.

I've been doing fine without you, really; up until the nights got cold
Everybody’s here except you, baby; seems like everyone’s got someone to hold
But for me it's just a lonely time, cause there were Christmases when you were mine

Christmas was always one of Taylor’s favorite holidays. She loved baking with her mom, and she loved winter. She wished she could just forget about it. But how could she do that? She loved him. She loved him more than anything in the world. She loved him more than baking, winter, and Christmas combined. She’d been perfectly fine without him, but then it started to get cold. It reminded her of him. It reminded her about how he’d taken her sledding and ice skating. It reminded her about how every week they’d sit in front of the fire and Joe would make her hot chocolate; but sometimes he’d forget the whipped cream, and he’d always make a big deal because he loved whipped cream. He’d never drink is hot chocolate until they had whipped cream. She’d smile at the memories, but eventually she’d just cry.

The break up was tough. It was out of the blue and Taylor didn’t expect it at all. Things were going so well with the two of them, and then all of the sudden they weren’t a them anymore. They just went back to being a Taylor and a Joe. She begged him not to leave. She cried and she pleaded… But nothing worked. He left her. He told her he couldn’t do it anymore, and that she should respect that. She’d never respect that. She’d never respect it because she didn’t get it. It didn’t make any sense. That was five months ago.

Merry Christmas everybody; that'll have to be something I just say this year

Taylor tried to focus on anything but the past, but she really didn’t know how she could do that. She decided she’d just have to force a smile onto her face. It was the only way she would ever make it through these next few days. If she had to pretend, then damn it, that was what she would do.

Bet you got your mom another sweater, were your cousins late again?
When you were putting up the lights this year did you notice one less pair of hands?

Taylor climbed into bed, snuggling herself into Joe. The holidays were coming up and the couple were discussing family traditions. Taylor really liked to hear Joe talk about his family. She’d listen to him talk all day if she could. He was so cute. She liked the little things, like the way he moved his mouth when he talked and the way the tone of his voice changed when he was telling stories.

Joe reached over, absent mindedly playing with her curls as he spoke. “I always get my mom sweaters. Always,” He chuckled, shaking his head lightly. “I mean, sure, there’s probably a million different things that I could get her. But ever since I was little I’ve gotten her a sweater. So I guess that’s kind of like a tradition. It doesn’t seem like Christmas if I don’t get my mom a sweater.” Joe explained.

Taylor smiled, closing her eyes as he told his story. “That’s cute.” She said, nodding her head lightly. “Generally… I just get my mom… anything really. She isn’t picky.” Taylor said with a small laugh. “I think this year I’ll get her a sweater though,” Taylor giggled, leaning over to press a soft kiss to Joe’s lips.

Joe chuckled, “We can shop for sweaters together,” He mumbled against her lips, pulling away for a moment. “Another thing I can think of… My cousins… They are always late. I can’t even remember a year when they arrived on time,” He laughed, shaking his head as he leaned into kiss her again.

“Really? You consider that a tradition?” Taylor let out a giggle. “You’re something else, babe. What am I going to do with you?” She asked, giving him a small smirk.

“Nothing. Just love me.” He said with a nod of his head, pushing her hair back behind her ears.

“Okay,” Taylor whispered. “I think I can manage that.”

I know this shouldn't be a lonely time, but there were Christmases when I didn't wonder how you are tonight
Cause there were Christmases when you were mine

This was getting absolutely ridiculous! How was it that here she was, five months later, and she still could not get this boy off her mind? She had only spoken to him twice in the past five months. She didn’t know why she couldn’t just forget about him. She just wanted to forget it all. The memories, the love, everything. She couldn’t take this. She couldn’t even enjoy her favorite holiday with her family because she felt so pathetic. Taylor let out a dramatic sigh. Her entire family was sitting around laughing and having fun, and she was doing the exact opposite. Taylor stood up from her seat, deciding that she’d head up to her bedroom.

She slowly made her way up the stairs, turning the corner before walking down the hall. She pushed her door open, keeping her eyes focused on the floor as she walked towards her bed. Maybe she needed a nap. She was about half way to her bed when she heard a voice, “Hey,” The voice said, and Taylor practically jumped out of her skin. Now she was hearing him too, really? What the hell was going on?

Taylor lifted her eyes, focusing them on her bed. She stopped walking, just staring instead. “Joe?” She quietly spoke. He was here. He was in her room. He was… What? Why? She didn’t understand. How could he just be here? After all this time that he avoided her and ignored her, how could he just show up here? Did he think this was okay? Taylor shook her head, feeling the tears start to form in her eyes. She couldn’t take seeing him right now. She was so caught up in everything. “What are you doing here? Why are you here?” She questioned, staying right in her spot in the middle of the room.

Joe let out a sigh. He knew that he should’ve called her first. What was he thinking? “I’m sorry,” He whispered, standing up and taking a few steps closer to her. “But I just needed to see you.” He told her, taking a few more steps forward. Taylor was shaking her head, but he didn’t care. He knew that she still loved him because he still loved her. Their love was undeniable. Everyone knew that. “Look, what I did…” He trailed off. He should have prepared what he wanted to say to her. “I was wrong. I was confused and I was scared but…” He trailed off again, finally reaching her. He looked down, slowly taking her hands in his. “But Taylor,” He whispered, looking into her eyes. “We’re meant for each other. Nothing I said can change that. I’m so sorry that I hurt you.” He whispered, slowly bringing his hand to her face. He took a deep breath, gently wiping her tears away with his thumb.

Taylor closed her eyes when she felt his touch. God, she had missed him so much. She wondered if she’d be stupid to forgive him. But how could she not? He was here, in her room, on Christmas, apologizing to her. There was no gift anyone could give her this year that would be a better gift than this. It was hard, and she knew it was going to be difficult to completely forgive him but… but it was worth it. “I missed you so much,” Taylor cried, throwing her arms tightly around him.

Joe smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist in return. He never wanted to go another day without her again. He held her tight, nuzzling his face into the crook of her neck, “Merry Christmas, Taylor. I love you,” He whispered.
