Yesterday morning I caught a train in to the city, where I've not been since perhaps... my last vacations (during uni semester I lead such a boring, suburban life....) and visited the MCA at Circular Quay, which was great. I had a bit of a time limit to my morning, but I think I managed to get the maximum I could out of it; I hadn't even known which exhibitions were on at the MCA, but I enjoyed both the Primavera 2004 one and the William Kentridge exhibition.
In the Primavera I think I was especially drawn to the paper & pins artworks of Sangeeta Sandrasegar which were mehndi designs based on the story of Phoolan Devi (the bandit queen); I loved the intricacy of the designs that were cut into the paper, as well as the way the shadows fell onto the wall behind. Also, the pvi collective's umbrella experiments were amusing yet powerful at the same time.
But I think I was most most at peace while writing in my journal as I sat in the Archive Room for the Kentridge exhibitions. I love his use of charcoal and the way he embraces the traces of erasure & re-drawing in his works.
And I (as anyone knowing me would know) was quietly fascinated by the contextual aspects of his subject matter.
