Time to update……
Sunday: Yesterday we drove from Topeka to Colorado Springs. Fun drive but the landscape was very flat. Nothing like we see in Alabama or surrounding states. It is flat, and there are very few trees (the ones that are there only get about 6 feet tall at the most). Colorado is just like this too, until you reach the mountains. It is very flat until the mountains, which seem to spring out of the ground and go straight up. On our way into Colorado, we heard that the weather was getting bad. SOOOO we stopped in the town of Limon, and went wardriving to find access to see the weather. BUT, Limon has some good tech guys in the town and everywhere we found a network it was locked. After we killed an hour there, we moved on to Colorado Springs and managed to bypass the tornados and hail. Yesterday evening we went to the Garden of the Gods… twas pretty cool. Lotsa big red rocks jutting straight up outta the ground. Then we went into Manitou Springs, a small town jutting up against Colo Sprgs. This place reminded me a lot of Gatlinburg, only less trashy. We ate at Savellies, a small local pizza and pasta resturant. It was VERY GOOD.. if you ever come to Colo Sprgs, you MUST eat here… plus the waitresses were HAWT!!!!OMG!!11~ After eating there we went back to the hotel and went swimming for a few.
Monday:
OMG LOOKED AT THE MARQEE AT THE HOTEL AND REALIZED THAT THE PIKES PEAK HILL CLIMB IS NEXT WEEKEND.. darn my timing… (see ricepatrol for pics of all the cool imports ready for racing)
Went to Royal Gorge, the home of the worlds tallest suspension bridge, worlds longest single span air tram, and worlds steepest incline tram…. AND the worlds tallest superman swingymabobber. It swings you out 1200 feet over the gorge. After seeing and doing everything there to do, we headed back to Colo Springs. It was raining so we didn’t get to go to Pikes Peak today :/… Maybe tomorrow, if the train that runs up there is still running, because the road will be closed for time trails for the hill climb. Sooo we goofed of in Colo Sprgs for a few then headed to Denver. We got to my uncle’s house (actually great uncle, but he is barely older than my dad… sooo my uncle), and OMG is it amazing. Huge house.. incredible view, and a Jag in the garage. They regularly see bear, deer, elk, mountain lion, and A LOT of birds. Right now the sun is setting in the mountains and it is beautiful.
Tuesday:
Today we hung around the house for a few, then we went to the Denver Zoo. Got in free because my Aunt is the head of the volunteer organization that helps with the zoo. The Zoo was cool because they just opened a new area. It was a new Big Cats exhibit, and the coolest part was when the male lion walked right up to the glass and looked right into my eyes. You never realize how big they are until you stand next to them. So after the zoo we came back to the house and just laid around to recoup from the traveling thus far. After the sun went down we got out a telescope and looked at stars, Jupiter, and the Moon. It is just amazing country up here. One day I want to live in a place like this, when I am much older than I am now however.
Wednesday:
Woke up, got ready, and went to Mount Evans. This mountain is about 100 feet higher then Pike’s Peak. On the way up we saw Mountain Goats, Pikas, and Marmots. Mountain Goats are just that, big white goats that live up in the mountains. Pikas are VERY small rabbits (8 inches at the longest). They are very hard to spot because of their size and color (they blend right into the rocks). Marmots are the biggest squirrels, yet they look like small beavers without the tail. They were funny to watch, because they laid out sunning themselves, and when you got close they scrambled off through the rocks. At the top my brother and I had a snowball fight. Yes…. a snowball fight. We were high enough that the snow stays for a LONG time, and the other day when it rained, it was snowing in the mountain.
OH on the way up, we passed a car that had all sorts of coverings on it to hide the identity. This happens around here pretty often because the car manufacturers test cars at altitude here, some of which are still in development. It looked like a 350z, but there was a Mitsubishi behind it. SOOO either that car just happened to be there and it really was a 350z, OR it was a new Mitsu. (again see rice patrol for pics).
After coming down from the mountain we headed to Golden Colorado, which is just down the road from Denver. After walking up the main drag and having lunch there, we headed to the Red Rock Amphitheater. It was pretty cool, but the coolest part was that my uncle said “If you run down, touch the stage, and run back up in 2 minutes… I will give you a $1000.”… OMG…. Sooooo of course I decided to try. I raced down and back up and made it in 1:22 and I am still trying to recover, I almost passed out. There were 70 rows, and they were each about 5 feet wide, so it wasn’t easy. BUT I did it J now I got the cash monie dolla billz. w00t. BUT… we decided that he would not quite give me the $1000, which was prolly for the best, so he gave me $100 and an IOU for the rest. So after the Amphitheater we went across the street to Alameda Highway and looked at the dinosaur tracks. Later we went out to eat at an Italian restaurant, then came back and laid around before going to bed.
Thursday:
Today we were on the road. We headed out of the Denver area and into the Rocky Mountain National Park. We saw some elk on the way up the Continental Divide. After heading out of the mountains we headed for Wyoming. The quickest way to get to California is to follow the interstate through Wyoming to Nevada and then to Cali. So right now we are in Rawlin, Wyoming. In a Days Inn….. without intarweb for the 4th day in a row. So yeah, when this gets updated, prolly tomorrow, I will be glad. I really need to begin editing pictures to post.
Friday:
Drove a lot today…. And then the intarweb was hogged by my father who needed it to “book a hotel in San Fran tomorrow” Yet he spent 90 minutes on…. Hmmmm… maybe I should just forget about others too and not post in this thing. Maybe you will get to see pictures tomorrow if I am not conned by my father again.
