And now, a rant.
So recently I watched L'ultimo bacio, the Italian movie upon which the terrible Zach Braff vehicle The Last Kiss was based. It was underwhelming, but better than the remake. It got me to thinking, though. Why is it that we're suddenly being inundated with movies and TV shows about twentysomething men who act like twelve-year-olds strung out on hot dogs and Xbox? It's the new pop culture trend. The twentysomething men I see on my TV play PS2 all day, shuffle around in ironic T-shirts with adorably mussy hair, and think that because they don't have the first clue how to get their shit together, they should just act all "sensitive" and "confused" and women will swoon.
Examples?
Jim from The Office: Jim is dissatisfied with his job, has no idea what else he wants to do in life, and acts out by playing pranks on Dwight, someone who actually does have his shit together. Grow a pair, Jim. Pam rejected you and we're all sorry. That doesn't mean you should revert back to acting like a fifteen-year-old in love for the first time.
Adam Brody in the trailer for his new movie, In the Land of Women: awful title aside, he plays an aspiring writer who moves back in with his grandmother and tries to figure life out. Yawn. Next, please.
Zach Braff in everything he's ever done. Although Garden State was horribly maudlin, at least it didn't leave me thinking vicious thoughts about castrating an entire generation of men like The Last Kiss did. This whole ne'er-do-well, I-screw-up-but-I-have-cute-hair-so-please-love-me shtick is old, Zach. Embrace your age, find a new persona. Like, a mature person who has goals and ambitions instead of someone who wanders aimlessly through life cheating on his girlfriends?
What is WITH 25-year-old men and their collective identity crisis? What has happened to our culture that we think films about men complaining about their girlfriends, scored (of course) with cool indie music, are powerful or important? You don't see women bemoaning the fact that they have to grow up. Let's stop treating twentysomething men like little boys who can't tie their shoes, okay? It's not cute anymore. And actually, it was only cute for about five seconds anyway.
Peter Pan complexes make me want to stab something! Is it a coincidence that it was the lost boys, or that only Wendy recognized the importance of maturing into an adult? Yeah, I don't think so. You know what, Zach Braff? I'm not your mother. Learn how to take care of yourself.
[/end of rant]
Um, so anyway, who's been watching Friday Night Lights? OMG. Last night's episode was ten different kinds of awesome. I have no words. If this show doesn't get renewed (NBC, you suck), at least we have the memory of one perfect season of television to cling to. Figures that a show with a responsible adult male as its main character is in danger of renewal, while According to Jim and other such sitcoms about men who never grew up were given multiple seasons of idiocy.
pop culture is shallow,
