oh but you

(Thank you Elise and Shannon for your encouragement! I really appreciate it).

I'm feeling much better. Like I said, it comes and goes. I think I've almost decided on what to major in. Now, I'm pretty indecisive when it comes to this - I've had ten possible majors in the past few years, not to mention my entire life has been a progressively more complicated version of the "ballerina or doctor?" debate, heh. But I'm thinking of doing a joint honours in philosophy and English literature. Yup. Guess I won't be getting much work after university but hey, that's what grad school is there for, right?

Of course, next semester I'll probably fall back in love with political science. *sigh* Nothing is ever simple.

I watched Just Like Heaven. Again, I don't know why. I guess I'm catching up on the cheesy romantic comedies I never had time for. Romantic comedies can be so intensely satisfying, which is what makes them so popular, I guess. I'm not normally the happy ending type (my favourite movie is Fargo - actually, I guess that is sort of a happy ending) but I can see the attraction of watching two beautiful people meet, separate and fight to be back together again. There's something so comforting about a romantic comedy. You KNOW it's going to end well. I'd like to see a good romantic comedy where the main characters don't end up together. Little Black Book tried, but it wasn't a very good movie. Anyway, I digress. Just Like Heaven didn't meet my expectations. I thought it would be mildly entertaining, and it utterly failed me. Mark Ruffalo seems to be the go-to guy for "vehicle" movies - you know, like Rumour Has It... (terrible) was a vehicle for Jennifer Aniston, and this was pretty much the Reese Witherspoon Show. I don't mind because I like her, but she's best in unlikable roles such as Tracy in Election (that's a great movie). There's something about her playing bitchy characters that's hilarious - I think it's because she seems so likable, but she must have a bit of bitch in her, deep down. When she plays sweet, wholesome characters it's like sugar overload.

I digressed again, didn't I? Okay. The interesting part of Just Like Heaven was her obsession with medicine. She's a doctor. I would have liked some more exploration of her insane work ethic, why she doesn't want to meet men, etc., but like most romantic comedies it glossed over that. In fact, she was in a coma after about ten minutes at the hospital. From then on it was essentially Sleeping Beauty with a ghostly twist. I don't recommend it, long story short.

Feel free to recommend some movies, f-list. Keep in mind that I haven't seen any of the big movies of the past five years or so. I still haven't seen Walk the Line (ooh, that's going on the list). Maybe I'll start with Best Picture nominees from the past five years and once that's done, do all the Best Picture winners from the beginning of the Oscars. Now, I know the Academy Awards are NOT the indicators of quality but I want to be more up on classic film, not obscure and pretentious film.

The song "Paperweight" by Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk (I think on the The Last Kiss soundtrack?) is beautiful, just FYI.

I'm deep in Season 4 of Gilmore Girls. It took me a long time to get through Season 3 because I love Jess and it's hard to watch his character turn into a complete jerk. But now I've moved on. I think the show really only started to jump the shark near the end of Season 5. On my second viewing, Season 4 is pretty good.

And now, back to reading John Stuart Mill...

tv, movies, philosophy, english majors do it better
