It occurs to me that the key features I keep seeing in modern plays are: marital infidelity; insanity; and dysfunctional families.

One explanation is that these, with their intense focus on the few characters on stage, on the tightly-confined interactions between them, serve as reliable, steady cruxes for playwrights through the ages.

The other option is that we haven't come up with a whole lot of new ideas in the 400 years since Shakespeare.
