So we're settling in in our new place. Givat Shmuel. Not a place we terribly wanted to be, but pretty good under the circumstances - close to both our offices, strong community (once we break into it), close to all the parental units. As to buying: if you don't have friends and family who'll give you lots of left over stuff (I had that luck, didn't have to buy almost anything), from advice I received and my currently meager experience: buy the absolute mandatory minimum. Most stuff can be purchased later by need, and you really can't know the exact needs in advance. You'll be getting gifts and left over stuff, once people find out you have a baby. Also, much stuff can be obtained used in excellent quality and minimum price in sites such as agora and yad2/winwin, because baby stuff gets used for a short while and then is discarded.
Basic lists of necessities can be found on the internet (f'rinstance, here) and even those lists are extremely over-populated. Things you should be aware of: sales on diapers. Check ads, and when you see sales on diapers, go and buy. Those things are bloody expensive, and the various sales make a huge difference in expense.
Oh, also, places like super-pharm and shilav have "gift sets" for new parents for very low prices (something like 25 shekels in Shilav and 10 shekels in the super-pharm, IIRC) - check this out with them. Those sets contain stuff like samples of ointments, diapers, pacifiers, bottles, etc. Useful.

I know of a great store in Yarka (way up north) and one in Tzomet Sgula (turn left at the bank Leumi, and then down the road there).
