I'm three days into my new job right now, and so far I'm loving it. I've already gotten over that initial phase of feeling all strange and out of place, and not knowing what to do or how to act. My reputation as alpha web developer and girl geek supreme has already been firmly established among my co-workers, who all are male and appeared somewhat shocked that it was possible to carry out a highly technical conversation with someone wearing a pink top and ballet flats. We all went out for lunch today at the pub in Cadboro Bay, where we sat outside on the deck squinting into the sun while the conversation revolved around sports and computers, for the most part.
The job is very flexible and self-directed: I get to choose my own hours, wear whatever I want to work (although I have to dress up a bit more for meetings and conferences), take lunch breaks whenever I want, and have as many coffee breaks as I want. Basically, everything is up to me, and that suits me just fine. It makes me feel very self-important and grown up when I get to walk into meetings and introduce myself as the Online Learning Community Developer for the organization. I got myself a nice hardcover black notebook to jot down notes and keep track of my schedule, and I'm thinking about decorating the inside covers with pink stars and hearts so that it's not quite so plain.
