Full PS HEADER tutorial

Nov 12, 2005 20:09

Ok, so i promised I'll make a tutorial for a header.
I really tried to use all of the elements i usually use in making wallpapers, headers or any other over 100x100 graphic :)

So, we'll be making (no surprise there since its got Natalie) a Garden State header:

the real header is bigger
also, it's ultra image-heavy and it's not begginer-friendly.
i wont answer questions like "how do i make a new layer?" and "how do i set it to soft light?"
and i definitely wont answer "how do i make a gradient?" since i made a tutorial for that and it's in my memories (just browse uncategorized)

Ok, image repetition is something i SIMPLY ADORE in everything i
make...i don't know why, i just do, so bear with me :) The other thing
I love is definitely hires pictures. That's very important. When you
have a hires pic nothing can go wrong. In any way. Really.
We'll be working with this picture: imagotoobigandcoulddistortmybeautifullayout:P
my picture is way bigger, it's smthn like 1700x1650

The header I will be making will be 600x300

First thing we do is arrange the pic(s) :)
Basically what i do is very similar to this tutorial. copy that part, copy this part, paste them all and blend them together.
So here's what i start out with

ok here's a brief explanation of what i did. First i took the whole pic
and dragged it over to the new canvas. i resized it to be very small.
then i went back to the original pic and selected a part of it. dragged
it over to the new canvas and put it over the left corner of the first
pic. now they were overlapping each other, BADLY, and i noticed on both
sides were clouds and the sky. so blended those to look like its one big
sky :)...then i felt it needed something more so i selected another
part of the original picture and dragged it over to the header canvas.
i put it behind the blended pics layer. it still looked badly
overlapped but i was thinking ahead, i can take care of it later. i
also created a new layer underneath all the pic layer and filled it
white. :) am i making sense here? the point is, play with it until you
like it!!!
next, hit shift ctrl alt e :) that will merge all of it leaving you one layer to work with, and the copy of it underneath.

then, i duplicated and set to soft light, then duplicated again desaturated and set to overlay. and that makes my base.

that's colorful :)
then, to soften the colors a bit i added an exclusion layer and filled it with #010717

then, to darken it all JUST A BIT, i added a gradient set to multiply,
but i felt it overtook the header, so i played with sponge, burn and
dodge tool. i ended up with this. set to multiply 100%

then, i needed some color tinting, so i added a gradient going from #bdd4c9 to #e8e6d2, set to color burn

now, textures are something every header, wallpaper, or anything else
needs. well not really, but mine DO. so i start adding them...
to add some texture i added this texture by tre. set to multiply 50%....drag it around to see where it looks the best

next is this one, by thia, set to multiply again, 100%
i just rotated it a bit, thats all

now, its a bit too dark, but i love the effect, so i just added another texture
(this one  is a mix of thia's and tre's two textures), i also
increased it's brightness by 25% and kind of desaturated by 50, and set
it to soft light 100%, also, it still seemed a bit too dark for me so i
lowered the opacity of the texture before (the one we set to multiply)
to 50%

(although the red-ish one didn't seem all that wrong either)

now, since the textures have totally taken over the header, i duplicate the base, set it on top, to soft light 100%

now make a new layer underneath make a new layer set it to soft light,
and stamp THIAS brushes (they're PERFECT for pretty much anything you
wanna make. i can't exactly tell you which set i'm using since i made
them all one big set, but here's the brushwork i've done. it's not much, but gives some texture

now, that thing i was thinking ahead :)
i selected something kind of like borders of the pictures, so i had
two, one for the big pic, and one for the blended pic.i also selected
something like a border all around the header. it's actually hard to
explain. i ALSO selected everything around these things i've already
selected...does that make sense? probably not.... so here's the pic

now, to get the sort-of-roundish-corners go to selection/modify/smooth/5px and you'll get this

now make a new layer (on top) and fill it with white.

now i did the little colorful boxes. same thing. use the polygonal
lasso tool to select parts of the white space, make a new layer, use
the selection/modify/smooth/3px thing to smoothen the selection, then
using color picker pick colors (duh) from the image and fill those in.

next thing...add some text..........
i used font CarbonType, 14 pt
to arrange the text like that you can use this tutorial (this isn't how i do it, i do it more complicated way but this is a really easy way and you get the same effect)
and i wrote "the edge of insanity"
then i used the same font and written some small text and played a bit with free transform's skew and perspective.

and there...we now have our header

now, this tutorial is basically made to give you ideas. as far as i'm
concerned this is my original creation, and you are free to use it, as
long as you gimme credit.
and don't get this wrong, i'd LOVE to see what you come up with, as
long as you give me the link to it and not use the img src tag in the
comment, ok? cause it might be hard for dial-up users to view the page
with comments full of 600x300 images. are we clear on that? any comment
containing the img src tag will be screened/deleted. no offense anyone.
have fun!!!
