Tonight I attended a lecture about the genocide and slavery occuring in the Sudan. It amazed me that this has been going on for about 20 years, and I had absolutely no idea. Now that I'm (somewhat) informed, I really want to do something to help. So, the least I can do is spread the word. They say the death total may be up to 400,000 people. This ethnic cleansing is occuring mainly in the Darfur, the western portion of the Sudan. The Sudanese government is actually advocating this atrocity. The government's militia pillages the villages in Darfur, kill the men, rape the women, and take the women and children as slaves. According to SaveDarfur.com "3.5 million people are now hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced due to violence, and 400,000 people have died in Darfur thus far." The President, and the United States Congress has recognized the situation in the Sudan a genocide. Yet, we do nothing about it. We forget about one crisis, when another crisis overshadows it. The situation in the Sudan has fallen out of headlines, thus "out of sight, out of mind." So please, take a minute out of your time and visit SaveDarfur.com. Be informed. If this topic interests you, and you want to do something to help, the site offers different options and groups you can get in contact with. Or, call your Congressmen, write letters. Do something.
