Writer's Block: Gamer's Choice

Now if you saw this question and you know me, you know that there's no way I can resist!

I tell this story all the time, but in case you haven't heard it... I wasn't even talking when I was beating boards on Super Mario Bros. on NES and impressing Bill and Linda's friends (who would then proceed to tell my mom). So that gives you an idea of why I had to jump on this question.

People ask me all the time if I play video games... truth is, I really only like old-school games. I don't even own an X-Box or a PS3 (I do have a Wii, however). If I'm playing a new-school game, it's the latest version of The Legend of Zelda or Mario Kart. I'm really not into Halo or whatever else is popular now, though the idea of killing Nazi Zombies sounds awesome (which game is that?)

Favorite old-school game? Depends on where you draw the line of old-school/new-school. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) is definitely up there, which was on Nintendo 64. If that's not old-school enough for you, how about Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium (1994) on Sega Genesis? I've lost count at how many times I've beaten that game over how many years (I think I was 6 when I started playing it by myself... before that I would watch Bill play it) and I never get bored. I still play it when I'm home and I love it. Good thing the Sega games hold up much better than the NES games and system, which you have to like blow 50 times and get another game to hold it in place in order to get it to work.

Part of me wishes that old games would be remade into modern formats (Wii, PS3, etc.) just so we can see what they can do with them and also so kids today can enjoy what we enjoyed in terms of story, plot, etc. But I would never replace or get rid of my old games and systems. I feel the same way with VHS's; there's a certain charm to them that modern technology could never grasp.

Damn, I enjoyed that.
