Oh no he didn't.
So, I've been playing Final Fantasy again for a month or so. For the first week or so, I had the typical "come-back" syndrome that everybody gets- you build FFXI up in your head again, think "man, I wanna go back...", but then when you come back you are bored out of your mind and end up quitting again. That happened to me.
But, one day, something snapped into place again. It could have been the four Nyzul runs I did that night, which are short and can be quite rewarding. It could have been the music. It could have been the ToAU storyline, or the Salvage run I went on. Whatever it was, I felt like I did when I used to play, without any obligations towards anything (definitely not joining an HNM LS).
At first, part of the FFXI returns problem was that I live in Japan and my timezone doesn't match a lot of my friends. However, I have been able to completely turn this around for the better- being in JP prime time has been awesome. I can join assault and salvage shouts as much as I want to, on my own time. Also, I have found that my friends are actually on quite often when I'm on in the evening, so it hasn't been lonely!
So, I have a newfound appreciation for the game. Doing things like the ToAU missions, Salvage, Nyzul, Limbus, and the like on my own time is great. If I feel like doing something, I'll watch shouts and can join in on a salvage or Nyzul run in no time. If I don't feel like doing something, I don't have to. The only thing I have "scheduled" is a once-a-week Limbus run, and even then, it is with some of my best friends in the game.
Done about 15 Nyzuls; got a couple bodies and a pair of boots!
Also have lost lot on Denali Feet, Hands, Legs, and a pair of Retaliator's during the last two weeks, as well as seeing a decent amount of Askar and other Goliard drop.
The biggest problem is that you can't do Nyzul and Salvage together infinitely; you need tags for Nyzul, or you need to do Assaults with your tags to get access to Salvage. I guess I could do something like 3-4 Nyzuls and 2 Salvages every week, but then I can guarantee it will take me ages to get any of the Salvage gear!
I guess in the meantime I'm going to make more of an effort on Nyzul while using the Assault points I have now until they run out. Nyzul is faster, quicker rewards, even though for the most part the gear doesn't hold a candle to the Salvage stuff.
