Medium: Real Life
Fandom: Real People
Subject: My Dad
Title: There Goes My Hero
Notes: My dad and I have a great relationship. I really didn't know what to get him for Father's Day this year, so I decided to make a mix of songs that remind me of him/he likes. Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there who make our lives special and we wouldn't be where we are without them.

1. Foo Fighters - My Hero
(The title pretty much explains everything. I adore my dad.)

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He’s ordinary

2. Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind (Part II)
(He was born in New York)

Grew up in a town,
That is famous as a place of movie scenes
Noise is always loud
There are sirenes all around
And the streets are mean
If I could make it here
I could make it anywhere

3. The Arcade Fire - Wake Up
(This was attached to the Where The Wild Things Are trailer and that book means alot to me and my dad)

Somethin’ filled up
my heart with nothin’,
someone told me not to cry.

But now that I’m older,
my heart’s colder,
and I can see that it’s a lie.

4. Barry Manilow - Copacabana
(He's a Manilow fan and totally blames it on his sisters; now he's passed it on to me)

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind

5. The Beatles - Black Bird
(My dad has put alot into teaching me to be an independent woman, preparing me for when I finally left the nest)

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Black bird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free

6. Bloc Party - Pioneers
(Dad has always been an innovative person and believes in the power of creativity. He's instilled this in his children.)

So here we are reinventing the wheel,
I'm shaking hands with a hurricane.
It's a colour that I can't describe,
It's a language I can't understand.
Ambition, tearing out the heart of you,
Carving lines into you.
Dripping down the sides of you.

We will not be the last.

7. Cat Power - Wonderwall
(Oasis is another thing we share, but I think Cat Power's version gets the message across better)

I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

8. Coldplay - Clocks
(My dad tells one of his awesome stories while we listen to this song. He's an awesome storyteller.)

The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead singing

9. Electric Light Orchestra - Livin' Thing
(I just can't make a mix for my dad and not have some ELO on it.)

Sailin' away on the crest of a wave
It's like magic
Oh rollin' and ridin',slippin' & sliding
It's magic

10. The Hours - Ali in the Jungle
(I posted this on his Facebook wall a few months ago after I heard it in a commercial. It reminds me alot about him and what he tells me about obstacles in life. Once, he told me, in regards to how I handled my parents' divorce, that "when people are squeezed and the pressure gets to them, they fall apart; but when you were squeezed, you focused.")

It's, not, how you start, it's how you finish,
And it's, not, where you're from, it's where you're at,

Everybody gets knocked down,
How quick are you gonna' get up?

11. Kele - Walk Tall
(More of my dad's inspirational demeanor.)

Rule number one, the bright life for some,
Wipe the room, wipe the floor like it's just begun.
Rule number one, be the only thing they see.

Rule number two, do all you can do,
With an awe in your eye and leave them surprised.
Rule number two be as bright as, you can be.

12. Living Color - Cult of Personality

Look in my eyes, what do you see?
the Cult of Personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
I've been everything you wanna be ohhh…

13. Radiohead - Creep
(Dad loves this song)

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

14. Ty Stone - Line of Blood
(My dad's such a freaking BAMF and I love being his daughter)

They say I'm the bastard son
Of one bad motherfuckin' line of blood
