Update.

In March, my uncle had a fall at his home in Chicago. He hit his neck at a bad angle and it caused spinal cord damage. He's been paralyzed from the shoulders down for five months. What's worse is that his autonomous bodily functions (specifically regulation of blood pressure and temperature) are not functioning, at least not as of a month ago. His condition got better, then worse and he's been checked into the ICU at the hospital after being in home care for a while.

Within the last month, the pain has grown for him in his neck and shoulders. His occasional comment that it would be better for him to just die started changing to him telling his family that he has a "do-not-resuscitate" order and that he wants to be taken off of life support. The family strongly opposed this. By chance, last week both his son and brother-in-law left town, and he decided he would disconnect on Tuesday, when his son would be back in town.

I found out about this whole thing on Wednesday morning. My cousin came back home and told his father that his girlfriend was coming out to see him and he should wait at least until Saturday to see her. When she gets there Saturday, they're going to let him know that he proposed to her. The family is completely opposed to the idea of it, and are trying to get him to wait.

My uncle has said he wants to wait until Saturday (maybe Sunday if her flight is too late in the day and he's too sedated to see her), and then he wants to "check out." Exact words.

I fly to Chicago tomorrow.
