Salene and Ryan:To Market

May 31, 2004 22:14

Salene led Ryan downstairs, glad that Cloe had gone after Mouse, she was worried about her but she also knew she couldn't always run after her. She had to get used to things, and sometimes a Mother's interference did no good at all, hopefully Cloe could talk to her one on one, make her feel better. Salene still felt badly, however, as she knew ( Read more... )

Ryan walked beside her as they headed to Market wondering how long it would be before the kids took over the Mall? He, like Salene, could already see the problems beginning to form. But he hoped they would be able to be handled before any kind of permanent damage was done. His kids weren't perfect angels, he knew that better than anyone. But...except perhaps for one or two...they were more mischief makers than trouble makers.
"Have we got alot to get?" He asked, realizing he might have been quiet too long.

Ryan nodded. It didn't sound like they had too much to pick up then. Atleast not in variety. He wasn't so sure that that basket she had brought would carry everything they needed though. Well, some of the traders had obviously raided stores after the virus because they had paper and plastic bags that they put the wares they sold in. With all different kinds of names on the bags, none of which that had anything to do with what they were selling. "Doesn't sound like it'll be too hard to find everything then."

He smiled, placing his other hand on hers laced through his arm. It was nice to spend some time when it was just the two of them. No Mall, No MallRats. Yet unable to leave their responsibilities behind. Salene was City Leader, recognized by ever kid who lived on these streets. Being 'alone' wasn't quite so private as it once had been.

Salene winked at Ryan before stopping at the first booth. She was buying a few things for dinner tonight, they had mostly everything Trudy needed for the stew, or rather, for the stew Salene was going to have to make tonight for Trudy, and breakfast was easy, Rice and Eggs (she hoped), salad for lunch, but Alice's dinner tomorrow night called for quite a few ingredients that needed overnight prep, and Salene was hoping to find the ingredients today, to get a head start. She only needed 2 cans of tomato paste from this booth, but what she had to trade was overvalued. She grabbed some sesame seeds and looked around, shrugging and grabbing the jug of shelled peanuts. What would they do when these things ran out? It didn't matter, use them now while you had them, learn to make what you could before that ( ... )

"I need six loaves of bread," she said kindly, the baker had been really nice to her recently, always giving her a good deal. She spoke with him about where to get eggs and he glanced around, telling Salene that he had chickens and he could sell her two dozen at the most, for a price. Salene put on a serious face, as if considering, and pulled out what she had, "What about milk, Marco? Do you know where I could trade for that as well? I've bought it before but the guy I used to get it from doesn't seem to come to market anymore," her face was filled with concern and Marco looked away ( ... )

Ryan thought ahead to his kids at the Mall. "No. Don't get them anything just yet. They're not used to having much." Not used to having much. And now they had their own rooms. And a new place to get used to. He didn't want them to think that they were living in Toyland or anything. That just because they were now here in the city that things would change. No, even for Flower he'd have to hold off getting her anything. Besides. She had a new set of fairy wings and new clothes to run around in. It should keep her busy for atleast a day. As for the others. He was sure he could find an old rugby ball somewhere in the Mall as it seemed you could find almost anything there eventually.

Salene nodded, she didn't have a whole lot to trade left anyway, but she felt badly that she'd said maybe to them and now had fallen through. Would the girls resent her for that? This thought made her frown, but she was lost in many thoughts, and she turned and headed back towards the Mall with Ryan. Someone out there had milk, and someone was making butter, two tidbits of information that seemed really weird to be giving out, and this made her kind of laugh, but that was a good thing. That there were farmers being productive, producing things they needed, or at least things that would greatly improve their lives, that meant things were looking up. The fact that they weren't going to come to market to sell it was disheartening, of course, and that he wouldn't tell her more. She hoped that he'd come to the Mall and talk to her, she was City Leader damnit, if things were this bad, why weren't people coming to talk to her as often as they should be? Of course she had visitors all week, city business to attend to, but it just seemed like ( ... )

Ryan helped take the groceries upstairs into the kitchen. Back when they had first come to the Mall he was certain this would have fed all of them for a week. He remembered when they had put Jack on trial for hording food. He twisted his mouth into a frown, wondering how the City felt about the Mallrats buying all this food. True, they were one of the largest Tribes in the City now. No other Tribe had ever had so many members before that he knew of. It was an unusual situation, even for the MallRats themselves, and he had already seen the stress that was being put on different relationships and people here ( ... )
