Life Update Things are going fine, it's reading week so I don't have any class but I need to start writing some papers/essays pretty soon. A couple weeks ago I got to hang out with Meg in the city and listen to Gary Trudeau speak, who was awesome even though he didn't look like Zonker. Then I got to see Common last week with Neil, which was a cool show-a lot more like a jazz improv thing than a rap thing, plus he basically had sex onstage with this girl from the audience, so now I only luff him more. Then Thanksgiving was nice at my uncle's McMansion in the middle of a cornfield, especially when my little cousin went feral. My apartment got redecorated this weekend and tonight Ari and I made a fort in our living room and drank milkshakes in it with her boyfriend. I'm hosting a holiday party for my creative nonfiction friends on Thursday which will involve vodka punch and peppermint truffles and hopefully intraclass making out.
Philistinism I've been thinking lately about how little I know about making anything besides writing-it would be good to be able to talk in the language of visual artists, or to know more about composing music. It's pretty sad, really, that I can play two instruments pretty well and I know music theory alright, and I listen to a lot of things, but my first reaction to hearing something new (especially if it's classical or jazz) is usually at the level of "oh that was nice." The problem is that I don't have much time to learn about this. On a side note, you know what I really like? Marimbas.
Maps There isn't enough space here for me to go on and on about geographical + textual space, but I've checked out way too many books (greatest Library of Congress subject heading ever: Extinct Cities) and I'm way too excited about them. I think this summer the ideal situation would be for me to get a summer research grant to travel around and write essays about it for my senior honors thesis. Maybe I'll also volunteer or intern somewhere in the city? Anyway, I'll almost definitely be in Evanston.
PSA I'll be back in Ames on December 10. Then I go back to school on January 2nd.
