I thought this quote might interest you if you hadn't already read it:
“I want relations which are not purely personal, based on purely personal qualities; but relations based upon some unanimous accord in truth or belief, and a harmony of purpose, rather than of personality. I am weary of personality. Let us be easy and impersonal, not forever fingering over our own souls, and the souls of our acquaintances, but trying to create a new life, a new common life, a new complete tree of life from the roots that are within us.”
D.H. Lawrence

Also, I agree with all that you've written. I feel that we (I) fear true success because the fall from such wonderful heights would devestate us completely. So we focus on smaller accomplishments, as you said, to keep us slightly above the ground, but we always shy away from what could truly change our lives's directions, bring it up to a whole new level. Maybe we've all grown so used to being bitter and depressed that actually achieving genuine happiness and success would be too overwhelming for us to bear and we'd find some way to screw ourselves over. We are self-deprecating and self-destructive creatures of habit.
well, I have faith that we can mend our old ways and exist for something we truly believe in. If we lived like Lawrence wanted, maybe we could all find our purpose together. The polar bear story is beautiful and it's a very romantic idea to think of life and existence as a self-made island, swimming through life as a single heart and soul never to be mangled with. But what's life and existence without the exhilaration of tangling your love with others?
hah sorry if you dont think this applies to what you wrote, i kinda lose myself the second i start writing.
