1. Is this article based on opinion or fact? Is it fiction or non- fiction?
The article is based on facts and it’s a non-fictional story.
2. Who is the article about?
The article is about an 81 year old Haitian named Joseph Dantica.
3. Who is interviewed, and why do you think those particular people were interviewed?
Dantica’s son Maxo is interviewed, along with the immigration attorney, Pratt. These people were interviewed because they were either related, or played an important part in the case.
4. What does the article focus on? What is the main issue being addressed?
The article focuses on how Dantica was mistreated in Haiti, so he tries to find refuge in Miami, where he is also mistreated. The main issue is that Dantica did not deserve abuse given to him by both countries, and that many innocent people are suffering in similar ways.
5. When did the event take place?
The event took place Oct. 24 through Nov. 4.
6. Where did the event take place?
At the beginning, the events were taking place in Bel Air, then it concludes in Miami.
7.Why did the event take place?
The event took place because Dantica’s life was threatened in Haiti by gang members, so he decides to take refuge in Miami. Once coming to Miami, he is placed in the Khrome Detention Center where he is unable to take his medicines therefore dies several days later.
8.How are you supposed to feel about the event based on the presentation of facts by the author?
I’m suppose to feel angry and sorrow based on the facts given. The author intentionally uses his choice of words and order of facts to make the reader concerned about how Haitians are being mistreated
9.How do you feel about what happened?
I feel terrible for Dantica’s family. I think what happen to him was completely unfair and uncalled for. It makes me concerned on how immigration personnel are taking care of immigrants who are trying to find freedom in this country.
10.What does the information in the article have to do with you?
The information in the article doesn’t have much to do with me, since I’m an American citizen, but it still affects me because my family are all immigrants and it worries me to know how immigrants are being treated.
11. What might you do in response to the article? Would you consider taking any sort of action?
Honestly, no. If I was to do anything in response, I would write the author a letter, thanking him on his article and getting the word across.
12. Would you consider this article a piece of literature? Why or why not?
No, I wouldn’t consider this article a piece of literature because it is a regular article. The article is interesting and makes the reader think, but as far as considering it a piece of literature, I don’t think so.
13. What do you think should be the job of literature? Why is literature important?
Literature should be something that makes everyone talk. Literature is something that hits the reader, teaches him and makes him ponder. It’s important because over the years, people can go back to the literature and remember exactly where they were and how they felt when they read the literature.
