After a somewhat frustrating week of trying to separate the stuff from the fluff behind early AI claims in 1980s papers, it was reassuring to see that someone at least was still doing fun stuff in the science department:
- They bagged another coelacanth.
- A comparative analysis of a known hominid skulls confirms the "out-of-africa" hypothesis and makes the "interbreeding" theory with Neanderthals unlikely.
- New fossil evidence from New Mexico shows that dinosaurs and their predecessor co-existed for longer than previously assumed.
- Jonathan Schaeffer and his team finally solve checkers. (I heard him talk at AAAI-2001 in Austin about his work.)
