I was very impressed this weekend when reading on the
income-based school integration in my old residency of Raleigh, NC. The bigotry of low expectations, if one has to use that vocabulary, apparently is best combatted by
not isolating the disadvantaged from those that have high expectations of themselves and their children.
So, in the next couple of weeks, when the principals of the local achievement and magnet schools start moaning and griping about the influx of socially disadvantaged children watering down their test scores, keep this in mind: That year may be one of the best breaks that these children are likely to get.
