LJ Idol Topic Week 2 - “Um…”

May 27, 2013 20:45

This week in my latest writing endeavor we were given our choice of 4 topics submitted by competitors from previous seasons and none of them were easy for me. ( See here for all four choices.) So after my initial 2-day “wtf” brainstorm I kept coming back to my knee-jerk response to “Um…”. So here it is, but a little background first.

Tighe or Bean-Tighe Faeries are Irish in origin and are what is considered a ‘domestic faerie’ in that they commonly tend toward household chores and are notoriously fond of strawberries and cream.

Oh, and they happen to be deathly afraid of cats. I don’t know why..

And if your initial googles for tighe or bean-tighe faeries seem to imply they are mostly female, I completely disagree with that. :)

“Um… “ Bert wiped a smear of cream from his mouth, then pointed at Bing’s strawberry with his fork. “You gonna eat that?”

Bing looked up at the sound of Bert’s voice and then glanced down at a beautifully ripened strawberry nearly the size of his head as if he didn’t even recognize what it was, and then he looked back at his twin brother whose eyebrows were pleading with him.

“Nooo.. . Here! “ he shoved his neglected plate toward his brother and then slumped down over the table quite distraught.

Bert dug in vigorously with a tiny knife and fork, sawing off slices of berry and then slipping them into his mouth with a gluttonous under-handed fork maneuver that was absolutely ridiculous looking yet somehow the additional effort Bert had to make to lean over the table to reach the suspended strawberry at the end of it all made it taste that much better.

Annoyed, Bing glanced across the table, “Is all that slurping really necessary?”

Bert, a 4-inch-inch tall potbellied Tighe Faerie, wiped juice from his chin with the back of his hand and burped raucously.
“I love strawberries!” he exclaimed, quite unaffected by Bing’s unease. “What’s gotten into you, brother? “

“I told you dim wit! Last night I heard the Missus reading a letter from her niece by the fire. I think she was reading the letter out loud because she’s excited,” Bing nodded his head as he said this, agreeing with himself. “Miss Laurel is coming for a visit, brother... And she has a.. c-.. c-.. “ Beads of sweat were beginning to form along Bing’s browline as he struggled to form the word.

Bert’s eyes went wide and he dropped his fork with a clatter. “HUSH BROTHER! We must never, NEVER say the “C” word! You-know-that!” He pressed a tiny napkin to his lips then worried the fabric betwixt his sticky little hands. “Just because Miss Laurel HAS a .. well… a _you-know-what_, doesn’t mean she will be TRAVELING with it! And good golly, brother, you almost invoked one upon us just now with your slippery lips!”

Bing’s cheeks retained the wherewithal to blush hotly. “But what are we going TO DOOOO, brother? Can you suggest what we shall do should she arrive here with it?”

“Umm..,” Bert swallowed thickly. "Run?"
