Celebrating Our Veterans’ Service

Veteran’s Day. Truly a day to celebrate America’s heroes. A day to celebrate the honor and bravery of those who risked everything they had, and those who gave their lives for our freedom. One day honestly doesn’t seem enough to give in return. We should have an entire veteran’s week. I don’t really think that the word “celebrate” suits the topic. A better word perhaps, would be “appreciate”.
It’s Monday morning, 9:10 AM, second period during school, and the morning announcements have just begun. “Please stand for a moment of silence and the pledge”, a female voice says over the intercom. While most of the students stand with their hand over their heart, about five remain seated. In addition, about half of the ones who are standing aren’t even following along, or even listening. They look around with bored expressions on their face, not comprehending why they have to stand.
Sadly, it’s the truth. This is the unfamiliar scene in virtually every classroom. That’s just one of the acts of ignorance, one of the acts that shows just how much most people have come to take their freedom and privileges for granted. Let’s face it: Most people these days don’t think about how lucky they are to have so much freedom. They don’t bother to think about all of the sacrifices people that they have never even met have made just so they could have a better life. I don’t think that our veteran’s services are celebrated enough. Maybe after this war we are currently in…. Maybe after that people will realize how important our veterans’ service is. Maybe then people will awaken, and our veterans will get the recognition they deserve.
