I just finished watching "The Royal Tenenbaums", and it made me cry. Unlike "The Life Aquatic", an ocean adventure also directed by Wes Anderson, "The Royal Tenenbaums" lands closer to home. An estranged father pretending to be terminally ill in order to get close to his dysfunctional family - particularly to his genius children - decides later in the movie to drop all pretension and just move on with his life. Although the dialogue is sometimes witty, the scenes can be heartbreaking. After Richie's suicide attempt, there is a subtle change in mood. From ditzy to bittersweet is the best I can describe it. And even though it ended with closure, the path trod was heavy and wrought with hundreds of tiny sharp thorns.

Definitely goes down as one of my favorite movies ever. I can't wait to see "The Darjeeling Limited" now. :)
