Miyu, Masao's mother, answered the door, followed by a billow of smoke streaming from a cigarette she held in her mouth. She was anticipating their arrival. In fact, she and Kenta, Masao's step father, had been fighting all morning about the conference. Kenta thought the meeting to be very invasive. Why should teachers come to the students homes? Once the student was outta school, it was none of the teacher's business what went on. He was also pissed that it wasn't until last minute that he was told that they would be coming. He had pushed Masao into a corner this morning, threatening the boy, assuming that Masao had been feeding his teachers lies about having a bad home life. Miyu had known for some time about the conference, but forgot to tell her husband. She said nothing as he shoved her son against the wall.

Some time had passed since then. Kenta had calmed down, and was seated in the livingroom, waiting. Masao was also in the living room, and he sat looking down at his feet, wishing this would end so he could leave and go see Kira or perhaps get high.

Miyu removed the cigarette from her mouth with shaky hands. "Konichi wa," she greeted them with a bow. "Come in, come in." She step back to allow for them to pass into the apartment.

"Konichi wa!" Fukuyo bowed excitedly back. "We won't be taking up much of your time but shall we get started!"

Miyu closed the door behind them, but she didn't put out the cigarette. The room was small and seemingly cluttered. The livingroom doubled as a kitchen, which gave the illusion of an open space. Two chairs that sat next to the couch had been moved to created a conversation area. Miyu was waving her arms towards the chairs, indicating to the guests that they should sit.

"Masao went to a very good high school at the start of this year," Kenta spoke from his place on the couch. "Far away, so he spent a good amount traveling instead of getting into trouble. Far away that the educators never had reason enough to travel to our home." Kenta paused to look towards Masao and then back at the teachers.

"But then he wanted to transfer to Gakuin. Did most of the work himself, before bringing it to us. I don't like secrets." He paused again, perhaps to keep his temper down.

"But I said okay because I seen girls wearing Gakuin uniforms before. Cute girls, perfect for Masao. The sluttier the better." This time he broke with laughter. "Ain't that right, son! Gotta get him a wife before he's old, and nobody will look at him."

Gendo was agitated by the smoke, but said nothing. Apartments were supposed to come equipped with ventilation for the tenants that may smoke. In an area like this, however, Gendo doubted that regulations were followed too closely. That still didn't mean she could be at least a little considerate for them as guests.

As soon as the door shut, he could feel the tension. He looked at Masao and then at Kenta, and got the feeling Kenta wasn't someone he would be fond of. Listening to him confirmed that. At the mention of slutty high school girls, Gendo could have fallen out of his chair.

"Watanbe-san, I don't think the focus of your son's high school career should be chasing girls. At Gakuin, we are very concerned with academics. We don't in any way promote scandalous behavior by any of the students, and I find it rather insulting that you would judge them in that way."

Fukuyo was glad Gendo took the initiative and spoke up. She was too shocked by Kenta's statement to even know what to say. It embarrassed her and angered her.

Kenta tightened his grip on the arm of the couch, but surprisingly, he laughed again. "You teachers only see what goes on in the classroom and then clock out for the day. If a boy ain't chasing girls at Masao's age, then something is seriously wrong with them."

The ashes on Masao's mom's cigarette were dangerously close to falling. Kenta spoke up again, "Now if you aren't here to tell me to punish Masao for whatever he fucked up, then start talking."

"Boys and girls at Masao's age need to be focusing on education and preparing for their future so that they can take care of their older generations," Gendo disagreed. "Finding a spouse isn't priority at that age."

"These conferences weren't scheduled to talk with only problematic students. We are here to discuss grade progress, attitudes, and home environment and health. Students tend to function at the best of their capabilities with a steady, healthy, home environment.

Fukuyo was nervous and not sure how to respond. "We are just trying to that are students are happy at the home as well as school and how we can improve them as a person. We want that for all our students and Masao is a good kid."

Kenta laughed again. "Well you can see here that we have a happy, healthy family. You want some sugar cookies with that?" he spoke sarcastically. "If his grades are slipping or if he gives me attitude, I'll handle it. You guys stick to teaching him numbers and such, and I'll handle making him to be a man."
