So, I'm going to see a rare orchestrion showing tomorrow in Atascadero and I'm inviting anyone out there who wants to join me. For those who don't know, an orchestrion is a bit like a player piano on steroids. The machines date back to the 1800's and early 1900's and are a genuine marvel of engineering. Instead of playing music like a piano, these giant wood and metal clockwork devices play several instruments at once and read their tunes off metal discs or roles of punched paper. Here's an example:
http://www.asapackermansion.com/orchestrion.htmlA dude I know works at one of maybe three shops in the whole US that restore these remarkable old machines and he's having a showing of his latest piece tomorrow at 4:30 in Atascadero (I think this machine plays violins!).
This event is for charity and there is a suggested donation of $5 (not required) to go towards the AIDS Support Network Food Drive. Likely there will be several machines to marvel at and the shop space is a trip because there are usually a few of these machines open with their various pieces exposed for examination. Check the details below the cut and contact me/comment if you're interested...or you can just meet me there.
