man, i love to learn new stuff /worker-class pseudo-english
i shall name myself henry from now on for my mother wanted to call me jan-hendrik if i'd been a boy Oo
btw, there's something similar like this going on in germany. for example, an upper-class name is 'julius'.
AND I WON'T READ THAT FIC! I HAVE WRITTEN NEW DOM/BILLY, DOM/HANNAH ANGST.

my cousin is called henry. it's a middle-class name. julius would be julian, and that's pretty middle-class too. OMG.

America's exactly the same way. Generally, there's an inverse relationship between how fancy or original a name is and how upmarket it is. Upper-middle-class names: Emily, Emma, Ann, Jack, Max. Lower-class names: Crystal, Tiffany, Dakota, Cheyenne, Ashley, anything with a non-standard spelling.
This changes slightly at the very top of the market, where the truly wealthy are.
And you're right, "Candace" is fairly downmarket.
my girlfriend and I used to play "guess the socioeconomic class" with the baby announcements. Like, you know that "Charlotte Rose" lives in a different house from "Tawnya Monique".
It's complicated here somewhat by the fact that African-Americans have their own set of distinctive naming preferences (which, American society being what it is, often translate to "downmarket".)

like i say, there's a big pool of names that remains pretty standard across the classes - thomas, sarah, matthew, etc - but as in america, anything 'creatively' spelt is pretty downmarket. for example, why do people replaces 'c' with 'k'? it's just WRONG.

Most of the time, class discussions on the internet make me break out in hives. On another message board I frequent there's this girl who lives in London and keeps saying things are so "council." *stabs* *kills* *maims* She's an American and she's being fucking classist!

katharine with a 'k' is a traditional name, at least. i'm fussy about names, i dunno why.
