Patsy's Room

[from here]

Patsy looked around the room and decided that with all the uncomfortable shouting and people storming off and going to prepare dinner, it would be best to go back to her room and change out of her wedding clothes and get ready for dinner. After changing back into her regular clothes, Patsy scrubbed off her makeup and sat down, slowly twisting the braid out of the top of her head. Certainly quite an afternoon..... Patsy thought. It was so unlike Ryan to get that upset. It must have been something very important to him. The way he was carrying on about children and Technos, something must have happened with one of his kids. His kids. That was still strange for Patsy to think of. Her and Cloe were Ryan's only children. Patsy knew that was selfish of her, that she should be happy that other children had been cared for by Ryan, but she couldn't stop thinking of it as just Ryan, Salene, Patsy, and Cloe - a happy family. Now, with all the other kids in the Mall, Patsy felt a little less special. Ryan barely had any time for her anymore, and Salene was so busy being being city leader. Patsy closed her eyes and wished for a moment that it was back in the beginning, just Patsy and Paul and Cloe and Bob with the very first Mallrats. It had been scary then, with the Locos, but it was no less scary now. Patsy was braver for having lived and worked in the mines, but there had been very little quiet since she'd been back. She had never found Paul, the color wars were raging - there were just more people and it was a little less scary now that Patsy was older.
Sighing, Patsy finished pulling out her braid and pulled her hair back in a ponytail. She should be much more grown up about this. She was a big girl now, older than Salene and Amber were they took care of her. She didn't need babysitting or mothering - she should let Ryan take care of the young ones - Patsy should be taking care of the young ones. But she didn't care. She missed having Salene as her mother and Ryan as her father. Now she had a large family - but no mom, dad, or brother. She supposed she still had Cloe, but now Cloe spent so much time with Ved she barely saw her anymore. The wedding had been lovely, and Patsy loved being with everyone - but there were so many Mallrats now. Patsy barely knew some of them, they were so much less like a family than they used to be, before.

Before. Patsy used that word a lot. She thought that she shouldn't - that she should focus on the here and now, the future. But it was hard sometimes. With Zandra coming back, and Bray and Amber finally getting married, it was like old times, very vaugely. But still different. And Patsy didn't know if she liked different.

Putting down the brush and standing up, Patsy collapsed onto her bed, sighing again. She should be more mature, stronger. She should focus on the good things she had. But it was going to be difficult.
